I have an 87 factory turbo 4runner. One one the previous owners hacked into the engine wiring harness and caused some issues.
The first is that when I turn my lights on, the engine dies. I think it is killing the electronic fuel pump. My brake lights and all turnsignals work as they should. There are other electrical faults as well.
My truck has the all digital dash. The speedo, rpm, turbo bar, oil pressure work. The temp and fuel gauges do not. Speaking of fuel, I am only getting 12mpg.... I'm thinking it should be more like 17 at its worst. The truck also has about a three second delay before any real power is delivered... wierd...
The final issue is the my transmission shifts out way too fast. First to second at 15, and second to third at 18. I did buy a solenoid set for it, but have never installed them.
Any chance that these faults are all electronically related? I'm hoping that I can simply put wires back where they should be and they clears everything up. But, I'm certain that is a long shot.
What do you guys think? I can't order an engine wiring harness.... any wiring diagrams out there? Do I need a new ecu? Should I just take it to a dealership? Will a diagnostic test capture anything? The truck starts everytime the first time and drives very well.... but with these quirks gone would be a good one.

find a shop with ALLDATA they SHOULD be able to print a wiring diagram...

can you tell where it was hacked?

I have a 22rte out in my garage with an unhacked harness still connected to it and the whole harness near it

edit: if your bored Ive seen a lot of these trucks with corrision on the wires right behind the dash? but if yours is super clean it should be fine bue you never know, I had a lot of grimlins in my 85 til I fixed the mess behind the dash

Yotatech has some FSM's for an '85. The wiring diagrams will be pretty similar to your '87. Toyota Factory Service Manuals (FSM) - all years - YotaTech Forums My 22RTE engine is an '86 or '87 and these diagrams were almost exactly the same as mine.

Sounds like the circuit-opening relay was hacked into?

I can't help you with the dash. But, I have a spare turbo non-digital cluster, if needed.

The transmission issue doesn't sound like solenoids. When the solenoids fail, the transmission remains in top gear, unless manually shifted. Maybe check the throttle position sensor.

This truck was on Craigslist a few weeks ago, wasn't it. ;)

thanks for the info... i read in one of the forums where bad solenoids caused top gear and pre-mature shifting. however, you could very well be right about the throttle sensor. is it easily manipulated, or can it be adjusted?

Hi buddy,
I had a 22RTEfor many years. I don't know about your electrical issuses, but I do know that that motor has HUGH turbo lag. As you noticed it takes a few seconds for it to spool up and move. Larger than stock tire makes the problem worse. I did actually have my motor checked at the dealer because of that and it was normal.

I had a little luck getting the tranny to downshift faster by adjusting the throttle kickdown cable as far out as possible, at the intake plenum. Just be sure that its not too tight and tugging too hard on some unknown part in the transmission, at full throttle.

Mine got relly poor milage too but maybe not quite that bad. An old oxygen sensor will cause it to run rich and decrease gas milage, and they only last 80K miles of less. Also, my power and milage went up when I replaced my old catalytic converter, so that might be somthing else you want to check out.

Here is a good old website about you motor too.
Welcome

Hope this helps....
Brian.

x2 on the turbo lag. Mine feels slower than slow with the automatic transmission. What mode do you have the transmission in? The regular mode on mine shifts from first to second at about 15 mph. Power mode holds it in first for much longer.

12 mpg is pretty bad unless you have larger than stock tires. I have 30x9.50-15's and if I'm nice and go 55-60 on the freeway, I get 20 mpg.
