someone on mud will know how the 22re serial numbers work. I have 2 blocks: both of fairly dubious origin. first one has a broken 3rd piston wrist pin or? something that I can't see yet. Serial number on the side of the block is 29789573 and there is a little philips head symbol with the number 308 beside it. This block has at least 350,000 k on it.

The second block has a serial number of 1778758 on it, with the symbol and the number 227 beside it. I assume the second block is older because it has a lower number? Intake, injectors, etc look to be about the same vintage.

I have no idea, honestly. I know the 2f guys have a thread going, it might give you some insight into Toyota's numbering logic.

All else fails call cdan. He might know. Would like to know your findings.

I'm just trying to get an idea of the age and mileage of the block I'm about to swap in. I ordered a bunch of parts from CDan last week. He was crazy busy, so it was not the time for serial number chatting. The donor engine has been sitting for a while in a shop, so no compression numbers or anything like that. Turns nicely, unlike my current one, which seized after piston number 3 developed a knock. I will do an autopsy on it later. It was running very well, with minimal oil consumption, no overheating, but age will get to you. It had at least 360 000 k on the clock.
