Has anyone out there ever experienced a front main seal that leaks (A LOT) but seemingly only under a heavy load or extended high rpm?
I've replaced it but no change.

It's not really the blow-by we associate with... well, I guess it is that D'Animal's thinking about...

Cylinder comes up, fires, gasses blow past rings and into the block causing high pressure...

High pressure pushes oil out at its weakest point...

I'm doing one right now and was thinking the same thing.

when mine was leaking once it started there was so much oil i could not tell if it leaked constantly or just under certain situations, i do know i only ever had to add 3 quarts at a time so once it got to 3 quarts low it would stop leaking.

Back pressure is present with the description you gave us.

Check for a burnt valve and or bad rings. You said you know it has had low compression for a while, recheck and see if it changed drastically.

A few things come to mind here to get you by for a while.

I'd replace the Harmonic Balancer and the Front Main Seal with a "Toyota" seal. Buy a sleeve for the crank. Use some emery cloth on the crank, next coat it with a thin layer of RTV, than slide the sleeve on. This will make a tight fit for the seal. Than replace as norm the seal and H/B.

Replace your PVC again. Cleaning out an old one is useless after that much back pressure. If you find the pressure to high you could always run an open vent and bypass the PVC.

That will hold for a while till you can dig deeper into the engine.

Thanks for the info!
I did happen to replace the seal this evening with a toyota seal.
The one I had been using was 1/2" thick and the new toyota one is barely 5/16" which seats in on a fresh surface of the balancer... Still leaking.
I'll try the pvc bypass next.
Thanks again!

Rollerracing had the same problems your are encountering. His rear main seal leaked so he replaced it. Shorty after replacing the rear, his front main seal leaked.

After chasing oil leaks he finally had ToyotaDon do a compression test for him. One of his cylinders had 0 psi compression and one had 35psi and the other two were normal. Valve adjustments did not help since his compression rings were shot.
