I have a 88 22re 4runner that I am using as my fishing truck til I finish my cut back second gen. A few weeks ago it started having this issue which by searching I believe is the knock sensor. When it first started it would only happen in 3rd and 4th. Just before 2500 rpms it would "hit" throw the check engine light, loose power, and start running quite lean. Turn the truck off and start again no cel. I've tried putting my scan tool on it, but it won't read anything. Now it happens in 2nd gear also. Is there any way other than the scan tool to check this? I've read most of the time it's the wire that has gone bad. I moved it around this morning and thats when it started in 2nd gear. Any tips? Really don't want to spend 150 on a sensor on a truck that I paid 500 for and only has to last until my second gen is finished. Thanks in advance.

Disconnect the wore from the sensor and shouldn't retard the timing anymore or send it into limp mode

I disconnected it and still the same thing so I guess it is something else. Completely lost on this. Only sensor I haven't tried is the tps. Doesn't make sense that it would be that one since it doesnt do it in first or reverse.

Next to the fuse box there is a diagnosis plug in. Take a paper clip put it in t1 and e1 and look the the check engine light with the truck on ign. Count how many time example 3 blinks stops then 2 is code 32. Then look up the code up here http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TroubleCodes/

Thank you mudder. I got 11 blinks and 12 blinks. So tps and knock sensor. Gonna mess with the tps first and hope it runs well enough to be able to fish. If not, replace the knock sensor. Only about 12 miles to the beach. Been 3 weeks since I've played wit a shark. Usually it's everyday. Going into withdrawals, lol

You're going to need to check base timing to get a good baseline of what is going on. The knock sensor "hits" when there is lots of spark knock happening in the cylinders. Basically your ignition timing is off. Remember there are two types of timing on the 22re, cam and ignition. Cam is the relationship between the crank and cam kept in time by the timing chain. Ignition is the relationship between your cam and the distributor rotor. Assuming you think the cam timing is correct, the timing chain not skipping a tooth or just not installed correctly, then you need to set ignition timing. This needs to be done before any TPS adjustment or you will be like a cat chasing his tail.

Jump Te1 and E1 in the diagnosis box and throw on a timing light. If you're not at 5* BTDC, then you have timing issues.

Let us know what you find.
