22RE cracked exhaust manifold

You realize that you are talking about an engine that, in perfect condition, only puts out a bit over 110HP? 50HP would be great but you need to do more than a header. If you can add 10 to 15HP to a 114HP engine, however, I think that's pretty significant.....but that's just my opinion.

Yes sir I know and that is the basis of my point. When hp is that low, % yields on gains are far less appealing than bigger engines. I mean, 110/125, really makes little difference to me. Slow is slow so why waste the money?

Again, I am not condemming the idea. I am just saying that the analogy of performance from header appropriate engines do not always go backwards i.e. if you can do it on a 3.6l why not a 2.4? Sure you can but why? The truck was not meant to be fast and even with the new 2.7l in 95/96 which ran the specs to about 145/150 I recall, the truck was slow. Sufficient? Damn right. But so is 110hp for this truck.

You cannot and should not maintain a stock exhaust for a header. First, it defeats the purpose and second, it often times just will not fit. So, now you are at the what, 750-1000 mark for a new exhaust system if you have someone else do it. At least 500 if you have the tools/time to do it?

Just my .02.

upon further inspection it looks like the manifold is fine and the crack is only on the pipe between manifold and cat in the section where it bends. the crack is easily visable now when looking into the engine bay from the drivers side fender. im gonna look into getting it welded or finding that piece from a junkard and swapping it in. thanks for the info, in the meantime i did fire off an email to LCE so ill post the response if its helfpul enough although evilspotter seems to have covered the possibility.

ive also read from others who just did the header that there was no performance gain noticed until the rest of the exhaust was replaced with 2.25 diameter and only then is it noticable, and apparently worth it (to some).

wardameagle has a good point with the performance gain percentage. if the header/exhaust replacement gives even something around 8hp gain, thats ruoghly 7% increase on a 112hp engine. to put that into perspective, thats roughly 20-21hp gain on a 300hp engine. unless you need the cash put into repairs elsewhere, it seems justified. especially if your original exhaust is in less than ideal condition.

Just an FYI for anyone in a similar situation near Boise, I have a full OEM header system that I pulled off my truck thats just collecting dust; free to anyone who needs it.

The header and stainless exhaust alone, shipped to my remote location, would be closing in on 1K. That kind of cost just isn't justified for my application-or any application short of a race truck IMO! I'll look into OReilly's, or a used OEM. Thanks guys.

response from LCE:

"...Yes that is a bolt on kit that will go to the
stock cat location and bolt to the factory flange on the cat, uses OEM
gaskets at the head and cat."

... to make sure its the actual crack thats causing all this and not some coincidental occurance.

cylinder 2 was not firing, exhaust crack had nothing to do with engine shake and horrible noise. looks like new dist cap/rotor/ and wires for me tomorrow. kind of a relief. fyi... local junkyards all seemed to ask $100 for the header pipe (between manifold and cat).

I guess I couldn't blame all the negative comments on Headers considering all the mal-designed/poor quality choices on the market. Plus you have to factor in all the little white marketing lies--wow. What I can tell you is that our Headers give a 7 h.p. gain at the rear tire (which is about 10 h.p. at the crank). Now do you consider that worth it or not---your call!!!!! Frankly, we can't build 22R Headers fast enough, so a good number of you must believe there is enough bang for the buck?????

Well, they couldn't manufacturer duct tape fast enough after we were scared into thinking we were going to be attacked with chemical weapons after 9/11 ( :

But really, I agree. Obviously the market is there. But I will stand that slow is slow so why bother ( :
