I recently swapped the engine in my 83 2wd because I bought it with a thrown rod. After I hooked everything up it wouldn't run at low rpms because of a vacuum leak that I couldn't trace. I figured that it was in the carb or vacuum lines somewhere so I changed the carb to a 32/36 weber. This helped but did not fix it. It still won't run worth s*&t. I just can't trace this thing. Is there some line that is not visible that would cause a leak? I'm about to pull the intake to make sure that the intake gasket isn't leaking even though it is brand new.
Another thing I was wondering about was where do I hook up that big hose coming up from the EGR that use to go to the air cleaner? Is there a way to just get rid of all that egr crap?
I'm pretty sure that my neighbors are getting sick of hearing me cuss at this damn thing.

get one of these and do not light it. open the valve and while someone has it running, move the unlit torch around and "probe" the area. the gas should get sucked into the engine where the vac is lost and it run noticeably better. then, the area is found

Why do you think you have a vacuum leak?
Why did you swap the carb if you had no idea that was the problem?
What was the condition of the engine you swapped in, was it a runner?
Why would you pull the intake off if you couldn't find a leak with the propane, or any other leak for that matter?
Have you checked:
Leaky diaphram in your brake booster.
Did you check the timing? Adjust the carb? Choke working?
Have you pulled the egr valve and checked it for carbon build up, and egr tube as well?
Yes you can get rid of the egr if you install block off plates, but don't see any advantage of doing that.
Do you have a vacuum daigram? A FSM will do you wonders.

The original carb had a crack in the side of it that would leak fuel. The engine was a good runner with a new top end. I'm wondering if the intake is warped creating a large enough leak, or a leak in multiple locations creating an issue where the propane would not affect the engine running. I've checked the booster and I know the choke is working because I have already adjusted the fast idle. I have not checked the egr however. I was wondering if it would be a big deal to just take off the egr since there isn't anywhere for the large tube that use to go into the air cleaner since the air cleaner I have now is a small open element. Right now the tube is going nowhere and I just put my hand over it to see how it affects the running, which is doesn't do anything.
Another reason why I think it is a leak somewhere is because I can hear the whistle from it. It goes away when it is WOT so I am sure it is a leak, but where the hell is it? I just can't believe that I couldn't find it with propane.

Update: I got it running pretty good now. The intake was warped so that it wouldn't seat properly. I took a straight edge over it and it was bad enough that you could see it on the straight edge. I don't know how it could warp that bad unless the PO got the old engine REALLY hot before it threw a rod. I used a different intake I had laying around and it worked great.
