Greetings mudders! Long time member and owner of several Fj40's just bought a 84 Toyota Tioga rv for family trips. Its in great condition for the year but does have some carb issues. You have to feather the gas peddle to get it going at start up and it seems to bog a bit also at first. Once driving its fine but I suspect it could be better. I noticed plenty of deteriorated vac lines and want to rip out all the smog equipment less the EGR is what I've read, but my big issue is the carb. Now I know a lot of guys have gone weber and wouldn't mind doing so as well if I knew it was going to be breezy but I've played with Weber on my Fj40 and it sucked at my altitude (7k') even with the high alt kit. I eventually bought a Trollhole carb and its awesome. (Reproduction of the original.) I'd like to get this one rebuilt by someone who has experience with these and high alt but also was looking at the clone carbs on ebay. Anyone have experience with those? I have time to work on this not in any hurry but want to improve the mpg and top speeds of this in anyway I can. Not looking to hot rod a rv just give it anymore that it can get.
Thanks in advance guys!

A quick fix might be the accelerator pump diaphragm. Over time they get pourous and will have the symptoms that you described. A thorough cleaning and rebuild will work wonders for your drivability issues. For high altitude use, we used to be able to get smaller idle jets and change out main jet sizes but I doubt these are still available from Toyota to easily swap out. A local carburetor shop, if you have one near you, might have some of their own tricks to improve altitude performance...try the yellow pages and see!
