2005 LX 470 - Grom BT with portable carplay

Just picked up a 2005 LX 470 and looking to get some sort of phone connection (aside from my current FM tranmsmitter).

I am leaning away from the V-Line due to cost and I would rather have a clearer more responsive display, I know it's the most seamless option. I could be convinced to go with this, but am not currently leaning that way. That being said, if I go with a grom bluetooth connection (one the retains the steering wheel buttons); can I bluetooth to a carplay unit also? Basically, is there any way to retain the steering wheel controls using a portable unit is what I'm trying to determine.

Additionally, anyone have a portable carplay setup they mind sharing?

I didnt really want to change anything but wanted phone and music streaming and frankly I am so sick of looking at damn screens. I found a unit called Yatour on Ebay which gives me phone (its own mic) music streaming and steering wheel still does volume and next track or reverse track. I am about to order another for my 1995 740i BMW. It uses the CD and you just select Disc 1 and works very well and its a clear phone connection as well. Not sure of this helps
