So I loved my 02 until recently finding out my sunroof quit. About a decade of ownership and no expenses spared when it comes to her needs. Almost everything is done now, over $15k in receipts and reliable. Funny I brought a new Bronco after 500 miles I knew she was not worthy replacement. Land Cruisers are great but so high maintenance and upkeeps. However I don’t think I’ll be happy with a new 4 Cyl. LC or GX V6 neither. Looked at the new Passport and older Cayenne then back to the 100 series. This black 06 with slightly higher mileage caught my attention but with unknown maintenance, my concern is why the oil pump is replaced? I like the slightly modern looks, better gas mileage, no rust, better interior and underneath condition than mine in similar mileage. Not sure about the newer design where all the controls are on the screen prefer the more analog 02 but extra gear gives better mileage with slightly more power are good improvements. Your thoughts?

So the moon roof broke and you gave up? Or maybe I read that wrong. Is it fixed? Still broken?

That truck will likely need a bunch of baseline maintenance… and could still have moon roof issues down the road… An oil pump replacement is not unheard of, but I would be scrutinizing that work heavily as to what caused it and how it was repaired.

What you have is a known entity that you are invested in. In those cases, I always recommend to just repair and motor on… unless its substantial body / frame damage from an accident.

Nope you’re not wrong I’m probably over reacting! Sunroof is not fixed yet but appears leaking from the seal and I’m trying to take the motor out to test but one screw is frozen solid so soaking it with PB blaster. Mine is accidents free and reliable but just seems like always something. I’ve even fixed the AC drain bracket recently so you’re right, kind of starting over again with unknown history. The selling dealer claimed the oil pump was replaced “ since we were there for the timing belt change, it was right there so got changed as well”.

That’s wild as that is, in most cases, an engine out job. Something is fishy there.

Even if you had to replace the entire moonroof assembly, you would be into your current truck for less than any baselining you needed to do on a likely botched oil pump job truck.

Where did it say that the oil pump was replaced? I saw an oil change along with the timing belt and water pump. The water pump is always a "while you are there" job when you do the timing belt.

From the seller’s “Carfax reflects three service records. We’ve just completed the timing belt service with the water pump and tensioner pulley, plus a new drive belt and oil pump. It also has new air and cabin filters, all new wiper blades, and a fresh oil change. I can dig up more service records if needed. The front seats were rebuilt by our upholstery shop using brand-new NAPA leather seat bottoms—not covers—and they feel fantastic. Overall, this truck is dialed in and ready for plenty of miles ahead.”

I do like the 200 series but not the GX460, current 100 series get driven about 5k mi a years.

Problem is if you don't want a crappy new turbo engine, a sentiment I share, and don't want to deal with maintenance pickens are slim and getting slimmer each month that passes.

Is the reason for wanting to swap your truck out simply because the 06 is newer? The power on the VVTI is definitely nice although with its own drawbacks especially if we're talking maintenance as a sticking point. Beyond even that is it worth giving up a truck you know everything about for a mystery truck? Again especially if maintenance is a big factor for you....

reliable but just seems like always something
Every car needs something, stick with what you got, don't get caught up over brakes, tires, oil, etc. Same costs come with any trucks, and the vvti will cost you more than the non vvti so you're not going to like the 06 anymore than the 02.

100 series is no doubt one of the most reliable vehicles ever made by mankind, but it's the age. I spend thousands per year on maintenance, I replace anythign and everythign that fails with OEM parts, and that's the only true way to keep one of these running and reliable going forward. Any used 100 series you pickup, count on a minimum of $2-4k in expenditures to baseline and replace anything the previous owner neglected.

Thank you everyone for knocking some senses into me, this site not only helps with my technical but also mental needs, lol! This one with the unknown reason on the oil pump change definitely suspicious. The 4.7 is the best part of the 100 series so shouldn’t need anything at this mileage. Btw I’ve found the source of my sunroof leaks, it’s from the seal so going to order one and looking forward to another great years with our car passions. Best in 2026!
