So recently I had trouble with my 2008 Land Cruiser 200 series. My family and I went on a light off-roading trip in my local mountains in Utah. We were on a trail that I felt we could benefit from using 4lo going down hill on a pretty rocky part of the trail. I went ahead and engaged 4lo and it perfectly went into 4lo and center dif lock. Like it always has. After we were done on the trails and switched back to 4Hi, we began to head home. At one point I needed to make a u-turn and that’s where my problem began. Made a U-turn and had to go into reverse. But when I went back into Drive, I felt a big jerk and a skip in the transmission. Then the traction light came on VSC, also 4lo and check engine also illuminated. I tried switching back and forth the 4Hi and 4Lo and nothing. So we drove home slow and took the side streets. Later during the week after some research I assumed it might be the 4wd actuators. But after some more digging and OBD2 scan it turns out it was the Shift D solenoid. My DTC code was P0983 Shift D solenoid high circuit S4. And the transmission will not go into 5th or 6th gear. So I’m posting this for future cruiser enthusiasts with cruisers that are getting up there in age. Mine currently has 240k miles
I will post part numbers pictures and tools I used to remedy the problem in hopes you can fix your beloved baby and get her on the road again.

On the said of the transmission is a thermostat that helps cool the transmission when towing. When your are filling up the transmission back up with fluid you must press the center button and use a small needle to keep it open. So you can get a more accurate reading of the fluid.

There’s a fair chance that you will be seeing that code(s) again soon.

Good work, though, I hope I am wrong!
I’ll keep this tread updated over time. Just out of curiosity, why do you think the codes will come back? Is there anything else I’ve could’ve done
