Hello Forum,
Toyota / Lexus list (2) Different Thermostats for the 100 Series.

Thermostat 90916-03100 (List Price $36.75) for:
- 100 Series (98 to Jun 06)
- GX470 & 4R V8 (03 to Jul 06)

Thermostat 90916-03138 (List Price $57.70) for:
- 100 Series (Jul 06 to 07)
- GX470 & 4R V8 (Jul 06 to 09)

The dates almost correspond to Non-VVT-i vs VVT-i, but they are off by 6+ months for the 100 Series (2006 Model Year got VVT-i) and 18+ Months for the GX470 & 4Runner V8 (2005 Model Year got VVT-i).
So, it doesn't appear that VVT-i is why they changed the Thermostat.

Any reason why I should use 1 thermostat vs the other?
The later thermostat is about $20 more than the early thermostat.
Is it $20 better?
Aftermarket thermostats for the 100 Series, GX, and 4R V8 are just 1 part number for all years.
IMO, the difference must be relatively minor.
I'd prefer not to stock both for my TB / WP jobs, but I will if there's a reason.

Toyota / Lexus also lists (2) Different Serpentine Belts for the 100 Series.

Serpentine Belt 90916-02586 (List Price $72.34) for:
- 100 Series, GX470, & 4R V8 (98 to Jan 04)

Serpentine Belt 90916-02585 (List Price $66.69) for:
- 100 Series, GX470, & 4R V8 (Feb 04 to 09)

I thought this change may have corresponded with the updated Serpentine Belt Tensioner Assembly, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
The Serpentine Belt Tensioner was updated Sep 06.

Any reason why I should use 1 belt vs the other?
Similar to the Thermostat, Aftermarket Serpentine Belts for the 100 Series, GX, and 4R V8 are just 1 part number for All Years.
IMO, the difference must be very minor.
Once again, I'd prefer not to stock both for my TB / WP jobs, but I will if there's a reason.

Any insight from the forum is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Tom

I don’t know of a different on thermostats - I believe they are both 82C Kuzeh made units and I could be wrong but I think they may be used interchangeably.
As far as belts they are both 6PK2240 but I believe one is Mitsuboshi and one Bando.

Thank you andrewderrick.

I'd be surprised if Toyota changed the part number just because they changed suppliers.
It's my understanding that Toyota gives the supplier a spec and as long as the supplier meets the spec, Toyota can sell it with that Toyota part number.

Hopefully someone can give us rationale for the different part numbers.
I stock the earlier part numbers, so I might just go ahead and order the later part numbers and compare them...

Just compared the 2 belts.
They appear to be the exact same length / size.

Serpentine Belt 90916-02586 is made by Mitsuboshi.
It's marked 6PK2240 M513031 192.

Serpentine Belt 90916-02585 is made by Bando.
It's marked 6PK2240 70 MK-17-B.

Appears to me that they are interchangeable.

With the aftermarket Bando and Mitsuboshi I’ve found them to be interchangeable, I’m sure OE are the same way.

The Bando and Mitsuboshi are interchangeable, but they are not of the same quality as OEM. I have used the Bando serpentine belts with great results, but they are not the same quality as OEM Toyota belts made by Bando. I have compared the two and even though they are both Bando the OEM seems to be better quality.

Yes I would agree with that, often the OE Bando is a cloth backed type belt vs the Bando being often a hard rubber. The Mitsuboshi tends to be closer to OE

They are both marked 6PK2240.
The "6" means 6 Ribs.
The 2240 means 2240mm.
So, IMO, the 2 OEM belts with different part numbers are interchangeable.

I just installed the early belt (90916-02586) on my late (2007...) GX470.
It's working just fine.

If you see TOYOTA logo on the belt, it is factory. Both Mitsuboshi and Bando make great belts but I personally prefer Mitsuboshi over Bando. If you get the OEM toyota belt, those things won't stretch as other two without the toyota logo.
