Are these gold pieces on backwards?

How much grease should the felt seal be leaving behind after turning the knuckle back and forth for a minute?

This can't be correct.

I am ready to pull the knucle back apart and try again

Did you put the rubber piece and the split ring back in behind the felt?



The knuckle will allow some grease out...even on a new build....how much was on the other side of the rubber seal you forgot to put in?

in this order:


axle (gold pieces) felt, rubber, split ring, knucle


also made sure felt was postitioned correctly (took my time)

tightened up both gold plates and tried them reversed.......



spews out alot less now..........


but enough on the drivers side to be concerned

I flipped them so the inner lip of the ring would push the felt

now the screws are pressing on the rims of the gold pieces...

Yes.

The inner lip should follow the curve of the ball....you need to put them back.


When you have them off, make sure the rubber seal is seated in the groove on the back side of the knuckle housing....

So if you turn it for more than a minute does it just keep coming out? Maybe a little overpacked with grease? Might just need to squeeze out what can't fit inside when it goes through the range of motion.

You didn't pack the knuckle completely full of grease, did you?

It is PACKED....

I used 3 big tubes

2/3 to 3/4 full should be about right. Else you'll blow out your inner axle seal etc. if/when it builds pressure from heat/rotation of the bell etc.

I have no idea what the capacity is but I'd say run it, keep wiping it clean, and see if it stops. If it never stops then you might have a problem to deal with.

Like I asked before, does it just keep seeping out if you keep turning side to side? If it does-turn it side to side for a while to get all the excess out.

Axle bearing grease, whatever's on the shelf at autozone. Never used hi temp, wouldn't hurt it but I really don't think that it really gets that hot. Where's Poser?

Yup dry! anyway it sat for about 12 years before i got it. jus a little dried up.

funny thing though. i put in a battery and a can of sea foam filled her with gas and wattya know. it ran!

I'm using red lithium grease. Lithium for water repellant goodness. But I've heard of people using just about every kind you can think of.

Molybdenum disulfide grease is what Toyota specifies, and all that I use.


Blackish color, stinks, will not wash out of ANYTHING you get it on...

You have it together....I would not tear it apart to clean it and redo it....but next time, you will know.
