1st Generation Tundras: Whatcha got?

I've been on mud for a few years now with a couple FJ40's and LX450. My first time wandering into this forum. Last night I took posession of my dad's 2001 Tundra. It's been his pride and joy. I'm down the list a bit. I just noticed on the Title that it had 14 miles on it when he bought it new. After 13 years it now has 63,000 miles on it. Lots and lots of coats of wax. I looked it over last night and there isn't a scratch in the paint anywhere. Very clean inside and out. He's never had any problems with it. He's been running 245.70.16 tires on it. That is the first order of business. I'm leaning towards going with the 285.75.16 tire. I was looking at this leveling kit: http://www.jackit.com/lift-kits/lev...s/toyota-tundra-leveling-kit/rlp-66-5025.html anyone here have experience with it? I've read a bit about the 5100's too. My plan isn't to rock crawl this at all. I have other built vehicles for that. But I do want it to navigate washboard and rutted roads with good handling. Looking forward to learning some things in this forum for a lot of years to come. Thanks

Nice score, getting an '01 with only 63K on it!

There were a few recalls regarding brakes, and the frame on the early 1st Gens. Have those been looked at/addressed?

Personally, I dont like spacer lifts. Make for a harsh ride, and put extra wear and tear on things.

You can do leveling with 5100s all around for not much more than a "good" spacer lift.

Anyway, welcome to the world of 1st Gen Tundras! :)

I would suggest adding another forum to your life:
www.TundraSolutions.com

Not too many members there seriously off-road their Tundies...Mainly comfort, appearance, performance/fuel economy, mild suspension mods. Lots of good info on general maintenance and upkeep, too. It is THE definitive and most active forum on the net for 1st Gen Tundras.

There are a few "grouchy-oldsters" that like to give new members grief for not searching subjects thoroughly before posting redundant threads, and the 5100s is definately at the top of the list, so search and read lots before starting new threads...(Its OK to ask questions on existing threads).

Other than that, everyone seems pretty knowledgable and nice...even the "grouchy-oldsters" as long as you dont rile them up as stated above.

The thread is back! All right. Nice score Liver. I have a spacer leveler kit on my truck (3" front/ 1.5" rear). Got it off Ebay. With the bigger tires, I saw an immediate improvement in handling. Lately though I am experiencing a lot of axle wrap. It could be the 214K on the odo. The rear leafs are very weak compared to the Big 3 full sizes. That is my only gripe. The disc brakes are a cheap and easy replacement. I had a warp-age. Switched them. I will do it again on the next brake job. Other than that I challenge any other maker to have the quality hold past 200K like my Tundra.

I am in the process of selling my LX450 and getting a Tundra. I will be using it as my daily driver and for auto towing occasionally.
I would really like the 5.7 motor with CrewMax cab of the gen 2, but my budget will probably not allow it. My question is on the gen 1 4.7 motor and if it will handle vehicle towing well? Is there a lot of performance difference in these two engines?

Thanks,

Dan

Listen up guys!!! I have a 2006 Tundra access cab SR5 TRD.181000 miles.put brake pads & tires on it Thats ALL. GREAT truck!! recently it showed a trouble code P2445 secondary air pump stuck off. Apparently this is a problem with Tundras and V8 powered 4 runners and can be EXPENSIVE for dealers or even anyone else to fix. Heres what I did: There are two vacuum switches on the passenger side of the intake,I unhooked the vacuum lines to the switches and plugged the steel lines going to the intake. Drove the truck about 10 miles, ran GREAT. shut it off started it back up about an hour later,CEL is out, truck runs like a scalded dog. This air pump is an EPA mandated emissions device so when this or other codes pertaining to the pump system are set its a "hard code" & the truck goes into limp mode & runs like crap. So far this has worked for me.if it changes I will let you know.
Hi Chrome45, I have the code P2445 problem. Did this fix you did work?
Thanks!!

This was my 2003 TRD before I sold it...
