Hi Guys
new to 4wd'ing. Just picked myself up a 1991 PZJ70 SWB with a few mods the previous owner put on. Trying to find out a bit of info on the 1PZ engine. My Mechanic here in NZ said they are rare, and another ih8mud member also posted similar comments in another thread. Anyone know the history of the engine, and why they are considered rare? Are they good engines?

cheers Rob

Hi rob

I wouldnt say they are rare buit they are not out there in big numbers. THey are a 5 cyl version of the 1HZ and they seemed to take the place of the 3B engine which went from the lineup about 1990.
As the 1HZ is considered one of the best Toyota diesels and the 1PZ shares all its components ,you would have to consider it good.

Why they ever made it is what baffles me. At the time of its inception they were already gearing up for the the 1KZ T which could do the job of a 1PZ ,and they already had a 6 cyl version for the cost of another cylinder.
I guess this is why it only had a a short production run from 90-95

I have never driven or had any first hand expierence with that engine, but others on mud have nothing but good things to say.

Welcome Rob.

Rob
