I am putting a 1HZ in a 87 FJ60. I had someone that was supposed to make me some engine mounts but never came through. So when I took out the motor, I did not measure the front. I read Vtcruisers and Kevin M.'s thread and need some clarification. The back is easy, on the original crossmember and the engine parrallel with the frame. Do you line up the fan with the radiator or do you set it at a certain angle? Stock shroud, modify it or does another one work? Thanks

None of the landcruiser fans are central to the radiator. From memory, the F engine fan is more towards the top left of the radiator and the 1HZ fan is a bit more central(at least in a 70 series). You will have to custom fab the shroud.

I would just make sure its not too low and that you have about 30mm of space between engine and hood when the hood is closed.
If you get the gearbox in the same positon as the old one the 1HZ engine will be close to perfect.
Another way would be to measure where the centre of the crank is at the front in a FJ60 and position the 1HZ crank in the same spot.
Or get in touch with Kevin and ask him for some dimensions.

hey man! long time...

I pretty much just eye-balled it. First I secured the powertrain to the transmission x-member. For side-to-side positioning, I tried to line up the valve cover parallel to the fenders and as already mentioned, the fan will not necessarily be centered in the radiator. For vertical positioning positioning, I suppose generally speaking you want the lowest center of gravity *BUT* make sure there is adequate oil pan/front axle clearance and also enough space between the bell-housing and firewall on the top side.

A few things to double check before welding:
  1. Oil pan/axle clearance
  2. Bell-housing/firewall clearance
  3. Shifter position from inside the cabin, just to be sure

Edit: Regarding the fan, I had to make a new shroud because the original HJ60 unit I had didn't line up, but I can't answer about the FJ setup. I've since gone to dual e-fans from a Ford Contour though, which you could consider as well.

sorry for the more than lengthy delay gary. here's a pic of the prototype mount kit. we still need to modify the scab plates but i stopped by the water-jet cutters' tonight to go over the last details. they will be cutting 5 sets of plates for me by thursday. we'll get one set welded up for you friday and shipped that day. i will be leaving friday afternoon for the marlin roundup but will make sure to get these off to you before i go. finally .......

as for the fan shroud, it's really very simple. take the existing shroud and totate it 180. you'll have to re-drill a couple of holes. i also take the lower rad hose and move it as far outboard as possible ( you'll need to have a radiator shop re-braze the lower hose pipe and close off the hole from the old location ). they'll also need to move the drain to a different spot. not sure if i have pics of a modded shroud, but i can look.

here's the last rig we converted, with the mounts from the pic above.

again, my sincerest appology for taking too long. there will be no charge for your mount kit or shipping.

here's a shot from the final engine install that shows the mounts pretty well. i have a pic of the frame after the mounts were welded in and everything was painted. can't find it on my phone but i'll keep looking......

fwiw, my kit is designed to work with the oem toyota rubber mounts for the 1HZ/!HDT. they can be difficult to find here in the USA but i'm working on stocking them so i can offer them along with the bracket kit.
the rubber mounts for the 1FZE in an 80-series cruiser are almost identical but you'll need to trim one edge just a little to get them to work. the gasser mounts are a little softer than the diesel counterparts and will allow for more engine/powertrain movement.

thanks a bunch! just don't blame me for the mattery hold-down. that's the owners' doing. everything else in the engine compartment i'll own.

georg

I agree the mattery hold down is a bit feral

You would want at least an inch, an 1 1/2" might be better. But you also need enough room between the fan and radiator.
