Hi guys, I have done a search and have found some sporadic info on 1HZ injection pumps so I though I would start a specific thread on the removal and replacement of a pump.

I have a new pump that I will be installing on my 1HZ, the engine has about 4800 hours on it now and I was told that they are a 5000 hour pump (mining industry specs) - if anyone knows differenly please let me know.

So, I will do a valve adjustment before I do the injection pump - just have to build the SST for the valve spring compression.

My main question is can I install the pump using factory alignment marks and will it still need to be timed? I am pretty sure it will have to be but am looking for past experience on this. The pump I will be installing is new and not a rebuild.

I would bring it to a diesel shop aruond here but I am finding that when I try to get work done on my trucks around here I just end up fixing other peoples mistakes and spend a pile of money in the process. The pump on mine isn't giving me the top end rpm that I think it should be and I have this new pump - so why not put it on.

Advice??

Louise, I would not go changing pumps just yet. Pumps are expensive and I wouldn't change mine unless I was sure it was on its way out. Are you sure that your current pump is properly timed? That could account for not getting the top end you think you should have. Also, you 1hZ is turboed isn't it? The best way to get these right with a turbo is to dyno tune them.

If you go ahead and put the pump on, yes you can just align the marks. This will be good enough to get it to someone who has the gauge to adjust the timing to its proper specs. After that, they will have to adjust it by dyno or "by feel" for the turbo.

If you like, you can buy the gauge and do it yourself.

If you already have the new one , replace it . the 5000hr rule is Low Ball trust me. It is the 5 year rule for the mines. The VE style ( distributor type) with the right injector pump additives can last a long time, but dont seem to have the longetivity as the in-line style

If it isn't broke why fix it. I have worked in logging and mills and equiptment was always overhauled on the schedual whether it needed it or not. Un-planned down time costs money. I suspect that is why the 5000 hour rule is followed in the mine. If the hook-up is similar to the Zexel VE on the TD4.2 then it is a simple job to switch out when it starts to go. You can also have the current pump bench tested. An IP is not something which breaks suddenly leaving you stranded. It usually slowly fails over a long period of time.

I would check to see if there is a screen filter on the banjo fitting at the top of the pump. The zexel VE pump has a fine mesh screen there which often gets plugged with scum. The effect of this being clogged is exactly as you say you have.

Edit: If you have the old pump off, you might as well replace the IP's drive shaft seal. That is the only one which can have a detrimental effect on your engine if it fails.

Canucksafari, 3 years ago I would have said no , keep it on for a while. Now with ULSD why not put the new one on. He has one for it already. I do know what you mean though. ( some people have more money to play around than we do LOL sorry for hijack

Ya, for the price of that IP I could go and buy me an old rusty Piggy and check one off my list. :hillbilly:

BTW, I have seen rebuilt IHZ IPs (no-electronic) for sale for under $2,000. I think there is one on ebay right now for $1,200 Aus.

This instruction sheet might help if you don't have it. BTW, if you decide to junk the old one, I might be interested in the plunger. Apparently it is supposed to be a 13 mm compared to the 11 mm in the zexel for the Patrol. I beleive it is a strait bolt in for a fuel shop and is one of the best post turbo mods for a aftermaket turboed TD4.2. Good luck, John
