old time interval was 6 years 60k miles, new interval was 7 years 90k miles. or at least that was what I was always told at the shop.

personally I don't really recommend t-belts based on time I prefer recommending on the miles as they are really tough and the only ones ive seen fail are either the old 4 cyl belts due to age or when a component like the water pump goes out. they can still fail by time and if something from 94 comes in with the original t-belt its time to replace it but if the car has 70k miles and its been 7 years if the belt looks good ill let it go.

I'm doing the timing belt/water pump maintenance and I have noticed some oil leak right on top/above the water pump.
I did have small wet area under the valve cover (gasket to be replaced now) but I can't really trace the leak down to the water pump area to explain what I'm seeing. Everything further down is bone dry.
Looking from the right side seems like there is a small leak/wetness around the 1st valve area. Pictures attached.

Can someone comment on it please? Am I dealing with a head gasket failure?

The camshaft oil seal often leaks around there. I usually buy a kit containing the oil seal. There is not much to it.

it’s been a while since i did this. will be time again soon. i don’t remember why i took that gear off. might be i thought that whole plate was one piece until i pulled it off! but no it’s not necessary to remove it.

Excellent write up. I will have to do the TB on my 1-HDT soon as well. Thankfully I do have the engine FSM to help too.

IIRC, the FSM tells you to remove that gear and then, after a series of other steps, tells you to put it back on again. There's no apparent reason to remove the gear (unless you're going deeper into the engine) so I didn't.

They also don't do it in this video of the job, which is also helpful like this thread:

What are the torque values for the alternator travel lock bolt and the bottom bolt on the alternator swing arm? The video above doesn’t mention torque values very well. I looked everywhere. Thanks.
