Thursday after work I decided to look under my truck to check for damages the winter may have caused. My truck never had any leaks but to my surprise I found a small wet spot on top of the front axel. The leak was coming from the injection pump around the place were Ciaren from Cruiser Land had replaced my non working cold starting devise for a 312G plate. I cleaned out my whole pump and left it for the next day to check more precisely from where the leak was coming from. On Friday after driving around 60 km I discovered it was no longer a little leak but now there was at least two. There was one at the smoke set adjustment and the other located at the throttle lever. So there was absolutely nothing wrong with the job Ciaren did on my truck, only the current O-ring aging and dissolving caused by the domestic diesel. After spending half a night researching the problem on the internet, I decided that the best option would be ATEB from Barnaby. Today in the morning I called them and Dan gave me an estimate on how much it would cost to re-build the pump. It came out to be $1300, which I originally planned spending on a new 3” OME 850J/OME 863J suspension. That sucks. On the other hand I am glad that this happened now and not in June when I‘m planning my trip to southern states Utah, Arizona and California (possibly Rubithon). So I called Ciaren for his opinion and he agreed that ATEB is probably the place to go. Just wandering what you guys think? I left my truck at ATEB today, on my way there, I guess around one gallon of diesel had leaked out!

AFAIK, ATEB does not rebuild pumps. They send them to New West Fuel Injection in Surrey. All ATEB does is take them off, put them back on and time them on the truck. NW Fuel Injection will not do this with JDMs and only with some NA Diesels. They really are not set-up to do this work. As far as the estimate they gave you, it is only a guess. They will not have a clue on how much it will be until the pump is put on test bench and checked. You pump could likely be fine and only need seals (they are cheap). Fom the test bench, the IP is gthen stripped down and the tolerances on each component is check. Any wear and the part is replaced. NW when they took me through their facility said that likely the rebuild for my IP would be $400-$800. If the power is still good on your truck and you kms are under 250,000, it is likely that the pump is not in need of a rebuild - just a fresh set of seals. Did you talk to Ciaren about it?

Thanks John for your information. No, I did not talk to Ciaren in detail about this. I still believe that my truck has less than 250,000 km. When I bought it, it had 82,000 km and it came with the original maintenance history from the Toyota dealer. Now it has 160,000 and running strong.
ATEB’s rough estimate was for 6 hour labor (to take it off and put it back) and $800 for the job on the pump. But nobody told me the pump would be sent somewhere else for the job, which I find B.S.

Six hours to take a pump off and put it back on? This is like them telling me it would be 4 hours to do wheel bearings. WTH? Maybe for someone who doesn't know what they are doing but for professional mechanics. I checked with a couple Aussie mechanics who told me that bearings would be 2 hours max for a papered mechanic. Fo that money, I will do them myself. I am not that impressed with ATEB.

I suggest you take a look at the FSM and estimate yourself how long it should take a mechanic to pull the pump and put it back on. The Denso pump looks as easy as the gear driven Zexel pump, but both are Bosch designed VE type pumps. I assume they are almost identical, as some guys take the denso plunger which is 13mm and put it into the zexel which is 11mm.

Ya your right John the math doesn’t add up. But this work is beyond me, just looking at the manual instructions make me nervous, I don’t know were I can get governor cover gasket, I guess it would be easier to get the O-rings. Besides, time is a big factor for me I needed to get it done quick.

Aaron, they did't rebuild the pump they just replaced all the o-rings and seals I should be getting my truck back tomorrow.

It’s been four days now that I’ve been testing my toy with the rebuilt IP. I have to say that I’m happy with the work that ATEB did on my truck with the exception that they ripped my sensor off ($125) saying it was like that before. Now my truck has more power and the exhaust is much cleaner, not to mention there is no more leak.

Glad things worked out okay Pawel. The fact you had less power and smoke issues tells us it was not only leaking fuel but it was likely sucking air. Did they send it out to NW Fuel Injection for the work or did they do it? Too bad about the sensor. Not fun getting screwed by a shop - even on smaller issues. Was it the TPS? I probably could have given you mine. Its the same one on the Patrols as the 81s. Not sure why it is on mine when it is a standard unless it has something to do with the AC.

No they didn’t send it out; they did it at the shop. The sensor was a fall effect sensor, also known as a RPM sensor, I’m not sure if we are talking about the same one. I believe that the sensor is responsible for the idle speed
