Good morning all.
Apologies in advance this will be a bit of a small novel but I rather explain everything from the start to supply as much information as possible. Sorry, not sorry!
Anywho, the patient is a 1992 dual fuel 1FZ-FE 80 series Land Cruiser
Had a complete engine swap in Feb this year and for months she was purrrrrrring and never skipped a beat. Just your typical beast of an 80.
Out of nowhere I noticed the strong smell of LPG and she started stuttering and struggling really bad like she was starving for gas. Took her to the LPG specialist and had a few bits replaced (will need to check invoice and update post later today) still stuttering and still very noticeably leaking gas. Took her back, more was done, still stuttering, still leaking gas. Took her back a 3rd time and the stuttering was gone but the gas leak was still very much present (how an LPG specialist failed to notice a gas leak 3 seperate times is beyond me. For context the 80 is my partners car and he thought I was tripping about the gas leak so never said anything....)
Gas leak aside she was back to purring like normal. Note that she had never had a single issue running on petrol whatsoever before.
October she got a whole rear end rebuild and diff locker installed. Pretty much picked her up from Mount Waverley drove her home with zero issues then parked her up for a month while my partner was away. Unfortunately she was parked at his parents so in the entire month she wasn't started or driven once. He got home on december 1st, battery had died, charged it, car ran fine for 1 maybe 2 days max.
In the last 3-4 days the FUEL TANK warning light has come on and she is back to stuttering on LPG like the tank is empty (it's got just over 1/2 a tank) so sluggish and just feels like she is exhausted and needs palliative care or something. This has gotten progressively worse. When starting her she sits on almost 2k revs which ever so slowly lowers over the space of 5+ minutes. Idling rough as guts while driving. Kind of like a dullish sounding thumping that you can also 'feel' (if that makes sense?) coming from somewhere in the rear with each 'put' 'put' stutter.
To start with you could flick her over to petrol and she ran fine. Not a single issue until 2 days ago when she started struggling even worse than on LPG, almost stalling when coming to a stop and just running really, really rough.
Yesterday she was struggling and felt like she was running out of gas despite the gauge showing half a tank, flicked her over to petrol and all you could hear was crickets, the engine just lost all power and the dash lights come on like she'd stalled, flicked her back to LPG, pulled up at a set of lights, flicked her to petrol while stationary and same thing instant loss of power (not even idling just complete silence) and dash lights come on. Stopped at the servo. Hooked her up to gas pump coupler and nothing. I tried 3 different pumps and same deal. Bowser didn't even activate let alone pump anything into her. Fortunately I knew she definitely had LPG so I wasn't completely screwed considering I would never have gotten home on petrol.
I personally believe she's taking in air where she's losing gas which has caused loss of pressure but that doesn't explain why she dies in the ass on petrol. I also considered the LPG shut off valve could be stuck open, not allowing petrol to get through. Fuel filter except LPG doesn't use a filter so it doesn't explain the LPG issues.
This old girl has been such a nightmare recently but we are too attached to her and refuse to give up on her.
Has anyone else experienced this?r
Or does anyone know of a mechanic somewhere in or around Broadmeadows/Glenroy/Tullamarine areas that specialises in or only works on Land Cruisers I can take her to?
Once again sorry for the small novel. If you made it this far hat's off and I appreciate you!
Any advice, suggestions, recommendations will be warmly welcomed.
Photos of the old girl just because.
Thank you all in advance!
