I have a 98 Chevy PU with the 5.7L vortec. Yesterday while my wife was driving the truck it just shut off. Key on no power to anything. I checked the fuses under the hood and they were all good, battery connections all tight no corrosion. Got in the truck, turned the key to run fuel pump ran slow but ran truck cranked normal but no start. Turned key off and back to run, strong fuel pump truck cranked and ran fine. Only difference is that now the charge indicator gauge shows the the battery being charged at 14+ volts. Confirmed this with my fluke meter 14.7 volts.
Got the truck home and let it set for a coule of hours to cool down before checking the starter connections and engine grounds (all tight). The starter was exteremly hot compared to the rest of the engine. Hell the CAT's and trans pan were cooler than the starter motor housing. Bad starter? Starter cranks fine and doesnt drag. Could it be shorted inetrnally? Any tests?
