Before I even explain the problem I want to say that my mechanic has trouble shot this for 2 days. It even happened when I dropped it off for service.

Sometimes when I drive to the 7-11 or stop or gas when I try to start the LC it will not start. Wait 15 minutes and it starts just fine. I've noticed that if I stop, put it in park, and wait before turning off the engine it starts right up again. But, if I'm in a rush and fly into spot, flip to park, and go it could be a 15 minute wait.

Any thoughts?

Your starter is showing the first signs of needing to be rebuilt or dirty connections. Heat can also be a major contributor to starter failure.

LC's run at high temps. Race cars have starter blankets and some starters have heat shields to help reduce heat exposure.

Start by cleaning off your battery terminals. Next check your starter contacts and plunger. Clean the electrical connections and use dielectric grease on them before you reconnect them.

Try it again and let us know how it goes.

I had the same problem with my 87 FJ60. The carb cooling fan (a fan that cools the carb after the motor turns off) was not working and the gasoline would boil off. The MR2 has the same cooling fan(dont remember if the MR2 has a carb or FI) and has the same problem when fan is not working. Both vehicles, when carb fan is not working, will start cold but will not start hot till motor/carb cools off, about 15min.

As the 1FZ motor is fuel injected I don't think there is a way for the gasoline to boil off. Long shot...Get a cheap laser temp and check the fuel system to see how hot they are.

Have you checked the pump in the tank?

I had the opposite problem with a starter. Worked hot but would not crank cold without working the ignition several times. Cleaned the starter contacts and plunger and it cranks all the time now.

Does the starter crank?

Had a very similiar and very intermintent problem. Mine turned out to be a bad battery. I had the Sears guys test it and initially they said it was fine. I got a "sideways" look when I asked them to amuse me and please test it one more time. Sure enough, it failed. Since getting a new battery I have not had any problems. Here's my R/S Thread: http://www.risingsun4x4club.org/forum2/showthread.php?t=17141&page=2

Starts 99% of the time. Turns over just won't go.

With this info it sounded to me more like a starter going out once it got hot and it wouldn't crank.

With this info I'd lean more toward a vapor locking problem.

OP, do you have a factory or aftermarket alarm on the vehicle? I would ask your mechanic to check for spark and fuel pressure next time it wouldn't start, to see what is causing the no-start condition.

Had that problem, this solved it.

You need a new mechanic..... was there spark or fuel when it happened to him??? We could guess at this til september
And try not to confuse the issue- motors either Crank, Run or do nothing...
