Cool! I always thought a 3RZ would not be too bad in one of these. Would enjoy seeing some engine bay pictures of that motor in there!

Have fun with it. Body looks solid.

that's what I was thinking. a popular swap here for the pre tacoma Toyota trucks/4Runners

haha thanks lad:)
the solid body was my main motivation for buying the old girl and engine left good impression on me even if it was a 4cyl (sorry for lack of pictures i will add some later)
i have seen other rj77 owners here turbo charge their 3RZ around here so there is that option if lack of power is felt
btw yours also looks very good, the red is very pretty

Thank-you very much for the compliment on mine.

Well, I look forward very much to seeing how this project goes for you!

well lads after doing some research it seems this old gal has a G series transmission behind it which originally being mated to a carbed 22R would be fine but behind the 3RZ you have to be more gentle
rn the car is in a body workshop , getting the paint and rust repairs and managed to find nicer dash pieces as well and its on their way to them
im afraid it might end up too nice to get her in the mud 🥹 jk she will be drowing in mud and sand

now the question is what or how i should plan for the rest of the car
i have my eyes on the H152F for that higher 5th gear so its quieter on the highways and a beefier transmission and transfer case with new axles in general(the diffs were screaming for release) , probably will keep the engine stock until rest of the car gets sorted
getting a modest bullbar with a winch, a center console cooler maybe etc
i am undecided and open to any advise from you lads

Good evening lads
She has been fixed and running, has been adding some miles, thought I would share photos and my thoughts.
I had never owned a 4x4 vehicle before so I was browsing forums saving tabs thinking "oh man I need to buy shiny new parts, I need to do this and that, its too weak!!" with no experience so my apologies if my previous posts made annoyed any Veterans .
I doubt I'll update anything since I'm not capable of pushing the car nor do I have enough experience to decide.
thank you for your patience

i don't think this needs a thread of its own so ill post it here
the whine in fifth gear has gotten worst and the clutch slips when under load (crawling to pulling in first gear)
i remember reading that pickup/hilux guys can use bunch of different mixture of parts to mate the 3rz to the old g52 box for the 22R
which means i cant be sure what mixture is used on this specific car
and if im gonna be spending money i rather spend it on a upgrade
then i saw this
1000137810.webp

a modern 70 series with an R151
this car belongs to the army and was at my mechanics for repair
but this basically means i can do the following
buy a transmission and transfer case for the HZJ70 and replace everything else from base of the bell housing forward and put in 2TR Hilux parts
only troublesome parts would be transmission mounts and new custom drive shafts
that is if the shifter comes out at the factory locations with regards to placement of the engine
if not i have to also fabricate engine mounts again to avoid cutting the floor
has anyone done this before?

i was originally planning on making an adapter plate for the GRJ70s with the H boxes and a custom flywheel but i decided against it for now
maybe in the future

Salaam, nice to catch this thread.

I have a 3RZ-FE in my Hilux Surf and I think it's a magnificent engine. I rebuilt it as the previous owner had badly neglected it and it has since served me flawlessly. It has decent low speed torque (for a petrol engine), great economy and is very happy driving the car at highway speeds.

In the Hilux Surf (4Runner outside of Japan) and J90 Prado, the 3RZ came with a W59 transmission. While not as strong as the R151, it will be a direct fit. I've driven a 2TR powered Fortuner and can say I didn't feel much difference over the 3RZ, probably the small amount of extra power and economy was absorbed by the automatic transmission.

Nice to find a member from Iran. I have spent about a year in total driving around Iran (over 5 or 6 visits), amazing people with a diesel, right hand drive Hilux. What an amazing country! I live in SE Asia at the moment and still hear Persian words which have made it into the local Malay language. Your license plate is from Mazandaran, right? A good friend d of mine is from Sari, I have every nice memories from that place :)

Hi thanks for the reply

thats the previous owners plate before i changed the ownership to myself
regarding the W59 box while it is available and it would be a direct fit for the engine
my issue is regarding the outputs of the transfer case and the shifter location
as this is a 70 series the axles are off set to the right and i can't use a pre 2006 hilux box and tcase as the rear output on those is on center
also 2TR (to my knowledge) is just a 3rz with the first vvti update for fuel economy and second for high rpm power
if it fits the 2TR it should directly fit my 3RZ

so this seems like the most hastle free path to upgrade, im always open to any suggestions

cheers

edit : also happy that you had a nice experience traveling in iran
hopefully we get to take a photo one day with our rigs next to each other haha
id love to see that hilux surf in person!
