Have a 94 4runner with a dead 3.0 and a 5 speed, have a 89 xtra cab auto with a good 3.0, pulling the motor out of the 89 for the 1994 anything I should be aware of any differences???

If the xtra cab is 2wd you will have to swap oil pan and pickup, if 4wd then no worries. You will most likely need to use your distributor and swap over a couple of your sensors and sending units. The plugs changed on a lot of them in that time-frame. I would use your upper intake, although they both look about the same. The only other thing I can think of is your 94 will have a hydraulic tensioner on the timing belt and the 89 will have a spring arm that has to be tightened down. I think both passenger side heads have the hole to bolt on the hydraulic unit. If you swap that then the timing covers are different.

The only thing that is going to bang you in the balls is the knock sensor plug. The knock sensor is in the valley between the heads and I am pretty sure your 94 plug will not fit the 89 sensor, so you will probably have to pull both lower intakes and swap out the knock in the 89 to match your 94 harness.

I think that is the major stuff but if I think of anything else I will post it up.

For reference: I put a 93 4wd motor into a 90 2wd truck and now the 90 2wd motor is about to go into an 88 4Runner.

thanks that is what I needed, they are both 4x4 and I dont plan on opening it up, may change the belt while we have it apart..

Both 4wd then it is just a matter of plugs and sensors. When you are taking each motor out you will notice the differences I am talking about. Some will be the same, like fuel injector plugs are pretty much the same for those years, but some will be round instead of square, etc. Not bad, just a pain to keep straight.

T-belt and water pump would be good PM while you can get to it easily. I would also do plugs and wires too, while they are easy to access. The tensioner change isn't a big deal, but you do need to know which one you have so you can make sure everything jives.
