I'm feeling like a moron at the moment.

I've got an 82 HJ47. It has no springs and is sitting up on jack stands. I bought an OME heavy kit for it but it didn't come with any instructions. I'm having a hard time figuring out which way to orient the rear springs to properly locate the rear axle. (I've got the fronts figured out.) I've searched through the various threads here and can't find anything definitive. I'd rather not need to do the job twice.

Is there a trick to figuring out which end of the spring goes in the fixed hanger and which end goes in the shackle?

I saw your thread and looked at the photo of the rear spring bolted into the front hanger. My springs don't look the same as yours. I don't have the solid yellow rectangle painted on the end of the spring like in this photo:

Mine have a plus on one end. I didn't know if it made a difference.

I attempted to measure from each eye to center pin on the springs with a tape. I know the shorter side goes towards the driveshaft. Unfortunately my crude measurements make it seem like the pin is centered between the two ends.

When talking about rear springs, the Military wrap end like the one posted in your picture and here:

goes to the front (frame) of the vehicle. The other end like this:

goes to the rear (shackle).

The + sign only signifies that it was just above spec (more support) when tested off the manufacturing line. It's suggested that if you have any + springs they would go on the heavier load side (drivers in my case). Otherwise don't sweat it. Some sets come with + and some don't.
