Anyone have an fj40 79-81 radio that's sitting around collecting dust? Mostly just hoping to fill my radio hole for looks. Thanks!

You could get a face plate from @ToyotaMatt and find any number of vintage Toyota radios (both AM and AM/FM) to fit it. Just watch out for the depth as you will interfere with the heater. PM me if you are interested in pursuing, I have a few radios that could work for you.

Those aftermarket radios don't fit and can require mangling the radio opening in the dash.

This would be proper for your truck, 78 - 80.

That's great! I'll PM because I would much rather have something stock if possible.

Not 100% sure but once the cowl vent was eliminated completely think depth should not be a problem. It's the recessed vent that was right behind the radio opening. Believe that went away in 77 when a factory heater installed. Online parts venders show 78 but plenty of 77 without the Welded close vent.

All FJ40 radios from Toyota are AM only. The 24V units are harder to find but I have a couple (AM only with face plate) if you are interested, send me a PM.

The original is still there, never used/doesn't work. Thinking I could get away using FM transmitter could do a trick, while still finding a stock radio. The later models (hilux etc) have AM and FM but 12v.

Thanks @Engineer8000 that gives me an idea. I could use a stock 12v AM and FM radio that fits perfectlly from FJ (like @447xpro) or Hilux etc. Then use a 24v to 12v converter. not experienced on converters, need to find out more. If all fails, I will go ahead with FM converters.
