Hi.
Perhaps someone can help me with this quandary. Are either of these speedometer cables #83710-69055 or 83710-69106 compatible with a 1978 fj40? The one I have is a push-in clip style, and it looks similar. But it seems like the 1978 is no longer available. Thanks

This may be helpful as a starting point on your answer. It appears p/n 83710-69105 would be correct for 1978. This info was current as of Jan '81, and could have been (probably) superceded since. The L in the description indicates lenth in millimeters. Good luck with your project.

Call your local Toyota dealership and give them the part number. If they are a competent operation, they should be able to look up the part number and tell you if it is compatible and/or the differences in specs. Sometimes they tell me the Toyota parts system doesn't have the detail on NLA parts and other times they do.

If the newer part is within range of what i need then i make an order and see if it works. The dealership i go to allows me to return items so long as they haven't actually been installed even if i take it out of the plastic and line it up.

I was looking at the same p/n for my 78 so let me know what they say. will give my local dealership a call on Monday and let you know what they tell me.

online MSRP shows at 148.19 based on my current research.

Thank you all for your input and questions. @timmyisinthewell, you're spot on--the number appears to be good. @rugbyrules05, the dealer I went to has an expert but he's not always there and they don't always have an exact answer. However, I got the speedometer cable #83710-69105 installed and it fits and works well. Here are my findings:

Here, the speedometer end is the same.

The transfer case end is the same:

But my stock 1978 FJ40 is about 15 cm longer. See here:

Whereas the original cable had been routed out down and through the frame/outrigger, the new cable went in more directly straight down through the original clips and down to the transfer case.

Sweet! You beat me to it. Got distracted with my wiring harness install and didn’t get a chance to call them.

Did it come with the firewall grommet attached in the middle and if so assuming it fit the hole in the firewall correctly?

How much did they charge you for it out of curiosity?

@rugbyrules05 Yes, it came with the grommet attached and it fit correctly. It also comes with the felt seal and 2 metal washers. She works as intended albeit I also had replace the speedometer gears and seals at the transfer case. I ended up paying about $160 after taxes and shipping, though I've seen varying prices. I had been doubting it would work because the info seems unclear. But with this finding, I hope it helps you and others.
