Is it fine spline? I've read that I should grind the housing to accomodate later, larger birfs which are more plentiful.

So, all disc brake birfs are fine spline and can use FJ40-60-62 birfs? I understand that it is a good idea to get/borrow/beg/steal a later model birf and grind the housing a bit to fit the later birfs, even if I'm going to reuse the older ones. The later ones are more readily available.

You are correct. The '76-'78 birfs are the odd ones. They are slightly longer, and the bell is 25 thousandths smaller. If you grind your axle housing to accomidate the later birfs, you will need to run a fender washer on the end of the birfield since the c-clip will no longer fit. Your best and cheapest option is to grind the housing to fit the later birf, but reassemble and run your old '76 birfs.
On my 40, I switched over the knuckles, spindles, steering arms, and hubs and basically run a 60 front end from the knuckle out. This allows the use of the minitruck/60/62 birfs and also nets you the beefier steering arms. This is a good option, but obviously is more expensive than just clearencing your axle housing, and running what you have.
