16" Wheels on a GX470?

See, this is exactly what I was looking for, thank you for chiming-in! Didn’t want to be the first guy to try it and find out that the 16’s work until the metal finally expands, right at 82MPH :hillbilly: j/k... Now I see the look I wanted is achieved too because the extra tire looks badass plus I didn’t want to reduce the size of my brakes to fit the wheels either:hillbilly:, lol. I was traveling for work lately so I hadn’t got time to try for myself, but I see a need for new tires soon! I have the 1.5 spidertrax spacers on it right now with stock wheels on 33’s but wouldn’t mind going 315’s. I have 315’s with the Baja TRD wheels on my 80 series and I didn’t think it would be possible to get that on the GX with stock bumpers so again, thanks for the input. The 35’s on my FJ Cruiser changed the gearing significantly, so hwy mileage was compromised quite a bit, but I imagine the V8 compensates -so hows the mileage now/hwy cruising?
glad I could help! the mileage suffered but its to be expected with these things. get about 12-16 highway and around 10 in the city. I daily this thing 30miles one way and gas up every 3 days. I also drive like s***. lol. these 470's def don't handle the tire size like the 460's do, but its nothing to be concerned about unless you plan on wheeling tf out of it. then I recommend swapping to an FJ rear. street wise, handles just fine and moves them like with no issues.

they cleared without the spacers on the front and back.

Note: if you do go with a 16in rim I don't recommend reducing brakes size, just shave the caliper where it rubs. should only require some very minor shaving on the fronts if you do have to shave.
Sorry I'm confused now, did you have to shave your calipers? If so do you have any before and after shots of them? I REALLY like those RRW wheels.

The reason that people hear mixed opinions about this is because it's a huge "it depends".

Wheel brand, material, diameter, width, and offset/spacers all play into fitment over your brakes. One specific 16" wheel may fit perfectly as-is, another may need a spacer to push the drop center away from the caliper, while another may never work.

I looked at my 17x8.5" 0 offset Method wheels and there is close to 3/4" of clearance between the caliper and the barrel, so a 16" of the same wheel "should" work.

Couldn’t have set it better myself! My buddy did stock 16in Tacoma wheels and needed every bit of 1.5in spacers and shaving.

Is "shaving" the new grinding??? :)

Anybody got any insight on 16x8” +0 volk te37? Looking into a set for my gx460...I figure if in theory they would fit a 470, then a 460 would also work.

Did you every find any wheels, and did they work on your 460?

460 has bigger front rotors than the 470, and I assume bigger calipers. But I didn't really compare calipers when I went to 460 brakes on my front end so idk if that actually translates to physically larger calipers 🤷🏼‍♂️ just something to think about

I thought the rotors were slightly larger. Thanks for the info.

Hi, did you ever try 80 series wheels on the GX? Was really curious if they clear. LX450 wheels are some of my favorites and I found a used pair for cheap online...
No, I never tried them but I was reading awhile back how someone has the 80 series wheels on an FJ Cruiser and they said that the OEM 80 series wheels do not clear the calipers without shaving so it may not work for the GX. I was looking to fit Tacoma/FJ Baja 16 inch wheels (OEM TRD simulated bead-lock wheels) on my GX in this thread and have the same TRD Baja wheels on my 80 series so I was referring to a different 16 inch wheel here.

Thanks for the lead on the FJ. Did some searching on FJs and yeah, looks like probably shaving and spacers.
