I got a 1999 LC and currently it has some rock warriors and some 285 70 17 duratrac tires with about 40-50% tread left ... I don't like wheels and I am going to trade him for some stock wheels and brand new tires of my choice.

He has a set of the 16's and 18's and I'm wanting to keep the 33" size,
The 16s offer more sidewall on the tires but it seems like less tire options.
The 18s offer more tire choices but less sidewall to protect the wheels from potholes and off-road rocks. Also they don't air down as good as a smaller wheel diameter.

So do I go with the 16s or 18s?

If your set on 33" tires, I think the 16" wheels make a lot of sense. 285/75r16 is a very common size and usually priced very reasonably. You're correct that there are more size options with the 18" wheel, but based on some quick googling they're also more expensive (and sometimes significantly more so). The 16" will also offer more sidewall to flex and more sidewall to protect the wheel when off road.

I’m coming from the GX470 world so this may not apply, but will 16” wheels clear your brakes?
