Hello
I decided to go 12 volt with my 1993 HDJ80.

So I ordered a 12V starter. Only one was listed with the German outlet I often buy parts from, but they had about a dozen 24V. Price was right, too €120.
CV PSH Starmotor 1,4kW (190.527.093)
I called and asked if they could guarantee it would work with my car, and they said yes. And I paid the extra €5 so I can return it if I like.

Got it and boy was it tiny.

I had presumed power to be sufficient but it is only rated 1.4 kW.

The Unipoint 24V that was in is marked 4.5 kW.
All the 24V diesel starters I am seeing are marked 4.5 kW.
I doubt 1.4 kW will turn the 4.2TD in Swedish Winter temps.
OTOH I will be using the car in warmer climates. Perhaps it will be ok.
I see 12V starters in the US for FJ80 and FZJ80 with higher power ratings.
But none in Europe.

Now I dunno what to do.
Must be a good number of owners who converted to 12 volt. which starter to use?

Ha! perfect thanks
googlin that takes me to Russia and Australia where they have parts in abundance
nothing in Sweden
but I can return my 1.4kW and get this 2.5kW instead from Germany
UNIPOINT Starmotor 2,5kW (F042S00079)
or this 2.2kW
LAUBER Starmotor 2,2kW (22.3020)
I take it that going 12 volt mean I can't get 4.5 kW

I cannot comment on the numbers you have supplied, but the number I supplied is a brand new Bosch unit that will bolt straight in.

Correct, you cannot get the 4.5kw from the 12 volt unit, but TBH you will not need it. If you want a little extra you can fit the 3kw unit from a HDJ 100 cruiser but it means a little modding to make it work.

This transformation is common in Spain. People just look for a (reconditioned) starter from an HDJ 100.

Good luck,

The HDJ 100 starter is 3kw, it also has a smaller pinion with a different tooth count, 11 versus 12 IIRC? This causes accelerated wear on the pinion, BTDT!

If you want 3 kw you will need to:

Get HDJ 100 starter.
Remove drive pinion.
Using a Dremel, widen the opening that the pinion retracts into.
Take the larger pinion from the 24 4.5kw volt starter and grind off the back stop.
Remove 1/4 of an inch from the push rod in the solenoid.

Fit and test, listen when the engine fires for a 'ding', if no noise fine, if you hear it then take a tiny bit more from the solenoid push rod until the pinion retracts cleanly.

I have plenty of pictures somewhere when I did the mod about 5 or 6 years back?

Finally got around to fitting the Bosch unit mentioned above, the 3kw is my trail spare, and still works perfect.

Thank you sincerely for your input

Lots info and there is a lot on IH8MUD I find
almost overload now
getting dizzy...
looking for a 12V with minimum 2kW and 12 teeth then

here is one 12V and 12 teeth that claims 4.5 kW

perhaps an error in the listing sent him a question

I think I will go with this one

Unipoint 2.5 kW 12 teeth 12 volt
UNIPOINT Starmotor 2,5kW (F042S00079)
240 euros incl shipping
can have it on Monday

then I can have it inspected and go on the road which is prio one now
There will be lots of q and a later I am sure

2kw would be marginal in cold weather IMO, and I agree the 12 volt 4.5 kw is an error, that would be pulling around 300+ amps!

Always pleased to help,

Germany insists the 4.5 kW starter is 12 volt

The Unipoint 12V is physically almost identical to th 24V

Everything is hooked up but wouldnt start. The ignition wire is short and it is overstretched. And even standing on a chair I can barely reach dpwn there. And I am 6'6! Fix that tomorrow, need bourbon now!

Looking at that paperwork it is a typical 12v 2.5kw but certainly not 4.5kw they are telling you.

Also look at the rated amps, 140 much more realistic for a 2.5kw starter.

The cabling is no big deal, the OE unit plugs in, you may need to extend the solenoid wire pretty common IME. The main heavy cable should be uprated from battery to starter.
