Dave, here is a link to starting system aids which would be well worth the investment if you are going to the arctic for a winter. I have the 12 volt 3B system with parallel batteries. Here in central Canada winters can be cold. If the batteries are in good shape with proper weight oil (5W-40 or 0W-40) in the sump for winter conditions there are no issues with cold starting at -30C. Replace your glow plugs with new ones as a precaution if you are going to be in a remote location. Get a block heater, oil pan heater and battery blanket which you will plug in to the mains at the job site or at home. Some municipalities here in the west even have power to outdoor parking lots. Modern design rare earth permanent magnet field, gear head starting motors have way more kick than the old style wound field starting motors as well as using less current for the same output power. You might want to search for a modern replacement. I know that Valeo has a line of replacements for a range of vehicles using permanent magnet field placements. Maybe land cruiser is in there somewhere.
