If you have rear heat you will have another button next to the rear AC in the center dashboard that said rear heat. If you don't have that button then you will only have rear heat from under the front seat when you turn on the rear AC. This was coverened in my 99 owners manual.
I have a switch on the center dash, forgot what it says maybe "Rear something" IIRC, next to the mirror heaters (you *do* have heated mirrors dontcha? ) I think that apparently is some override of the rear controls. So if the kids play with the rear temp control (on the ceiling) I can turn it off from the front. There is no heater switch on the back of the center console cuz that's where all the audio controls for the rear seats are (you *do* have separate CD etc and headphones for the center passengers, dontcha? )
And no such thing as A/C from floor vents in the back according to my manual...

Careful, careful Eric,
if you show off your options then Beowulf will confiscate your cricket bat
Alright, I went and piddled and the LX must have a different a/c brain than the LC. My heat and a/c both operate according to what I have pressed, which is directly in contradiction to what e999's '03 manual says. I assume this is an '03 manual for a LC and therein lies the difference. It's surprising that the LX would have a different brain for this but that is my only explanation.
I had no trouble getting hot air and cold air out of every vent in the 2nd and 3rd row, upper and lower when I asked it to output to upper and lower vents. When I selected the upper vents, it would again output hot or cold air depending on the temperature desired. Same response from the lower. I didn't think I had imagined this! The 'auto' mode controls more than vent exit temperature to strictly maintain the temperature, at least in the LX. It of course regulates the temp of the air it is pushing, it also controls the fan speed and automatically changes the vents to operate in a fashion similarly to what e999 describes with the hot air at the feet and cold air from up top. Of course the fresh versus recirculated air is controlled from the front which includes an auto mode linked to an electronic sniffer that can automatically change the fresh air intake to help reduce the intake of exhaust fumes and other unwanted stenches.
This concludes the end of my investigation as I never sit back there anyways so I don't give two :-X 's where the air comes from for those folks in row 2 or 3!!!!
The auto climate in front and rear controls hot and cold air in any way as desired. That is true. I also understand that I can shut off the rear A/C with the button in the front dash.
But I wonder about the button for rear heat with high and low position ???
Since all temperatures are controlled by the auto climate there is not need to have a separate button
Or maybe it is a leftover from 80's without rear A/C and without auto climate ???
