100-series originally planned to include cargo cover? (1 Viewer)

I was watching old LC/LX videos on youtube and happened across this MotorWeek video from 1998. Right around the 2:21 mark you can see there is a roll-up, factory-mounted cargo cover sitting in the back.
I wonder why these didn't make it to production?

Thanks, I searched and read a few threads but couldn’t find anything definitive. I believe somebody said the third row somehow interfered, but any idea if this is accurate?

We had that in our old station wagon. Never used it. Never understood the idea behind it to be honest.

I had one in my BMW wagon and used it to hide things in the cargo area. Now I have KISS drawers for that.

The parts catalog doesn’t specify 3rd row seat or not. But it would make sense if the cover never offered in a 3rd row equipped 100. The shoulder belts would certainly get in the way as well. I think the bigger issue would be rear AC as the side panel is much different. I only see one type of cover and one set (4) of hangers.

When I compare the video still image to my vehicle it seems the mounts would clear all seatbelts, even the rear as they have those little hangars that keep them off to the sides and the cover seems narrower on the vinyl part as compared to the roller mechanism body. Also it mounts above the side panels, on to the waist rail just below the glass. I don't think clearance would be an issue, but I'm not sure what under those areas to mount to, if there's already threaded bolt holes which is what most manufacturers do for region-specific things like this.

What parts catalog are you using? I couldn't find the option on dealer parts diagrams. Would be interesting to see if this is possible, tho I'm sure the real deterrent is the cost of those items if you could even still source them.

I priced this out years ago. If you can get the parts, which are nla, I believe the retail was in the ballpark of $1700-2100 so I scrapped the idea almost immediately. I installed shades in the back instead, giving me privacy and protection from the sun.

Found the part numbers on TLCFAQ, but I am not going to do this as I don't want to replace the side trim that the parts connect to. Maybe it will help somebody in the future.

Is There a Cover For the Cargo Area?

I was on the road/phone when I posted last. Had a chance to take a closer look. Correction: there is indeed two different part numbers for the cargo cover: w/ or w/o rear AC. Here is an '02 with 3rd row seats and rear AC. I'm guessing our side panels could be modified to accept the hangers.

On Partsouq, the rear AC version does show up as NLA but the non-AC version shows up as available in very limited quantities. On Amayama, the rear AC version shows as available. Their inventory doesn't seem real time to me though as having a couple of my orders canceled in the past. The difference between AC and non-AC appears to be the width of the actual cover.

I believe I have a cargo cover from 02 LC I sold couple of years ago. I can take measurements to make sure it is the right fit and it’s free to whoever is willing to pick it up in NW Arkansas or can ship on your dime.
