Cross-post from Pirate :D:

I'm doing a Superduty axle conversion on my 60 & want to use the stock Superduty steering since Dana 60 balljoint crossover steering is a fortune. I considered chevy 1ton TRE's but the superduty ends are very heavy duty and the knuckle side of the draglink already has the proper bend in it to accomodate spring over suspension.

I need to lengthen the draglink but the threads are an odd 1" x 16 tpi thread.
Does anyone know where I can find left hand & right hand threaded inserts with jam nuts? Is it possible to get some inserts & jamnuts made on a lathe?

I found a company here that makes custom taps in this size for about $50 each. This would be fine for tapping tubing but I'm not sure how I would go about making some proper & safe jam nuts. Any ideas?

Last resort would be to cut the split coupling in half & weld it into some tubing. Not the safest way but atleast I would still have the clamp type OEM retainers. I'm not sure if I'd even consider doing this.

Thanks in advance!

$50 for a custom tap s an EXCELLENT price, but at taht size tapping without a lathe would be a super PITA.

Tapping with a lathe would be cake and all you would have to do is machine a couple of flat spots in the tubing, then cut a section off for jam nuts.

I have a buddy with a snall lathe.. But I doubt it is accurate enough to do what you want..

Tommy could do it in Carson If you are heading up there sometime..

try taping the tubing and then sloting it. put a clamp around it and you have the stock setup but with the option of thicker tube... or take a coupling nut in 3/8x 24 and weld it crosswise to the slot in the tube, then drillout one side to clear the bolt. instant clamp. if you want more clamping power do 2, but put the bolts in from oposite sides. if my explanation is confusing look at how the seatpost is held in a bicycle.
good luck, carl

I'll give you a ring tomorrow, I have been in Ely the past couple of days...
