Hi there. Question. Is this unit for the lower part of the tailgate to soften the opening? Is it specific to 2018+ LC only ?

Correct, softens the opening. I believe it is 2016+ (I was going to install on my 17) there are a few threads about it on here you should check out…lmk if you’re interested
