I know this may sound silly but I really have no knowledge of cars. recently bought my son a hj75 ute. It has split rim tyres, 6 stud, currently 750 R16 LT - not too bad but....... Anyway I see tyres for sale on ebay etc but really have no idea of which tyres other than those on it currently would fit. Can someone please give me a list of tyres that would fit. If we decide to buy rimsa as well and ditch the split rims what size would I be looking at for this vehicle. I could go to a dealer but they confuse me and try to sell a big, expensive package. Looking forward to hearing from someone. We are in Melbourne Australia Meredith
 
YakYak Your split rims and 16 inch skinnies are the cheapest and easiest to maintain.

The other alternative is to buy some used 15x8 rims (white ROH or Sunraysia type ) and fit either 31/32/33 inch tyres.
I think the 31x10.5x15 are about $160 each for BFG T/A AND $29O for their 33x10.5x15.

To get the 33 inch you will need suspension that is new or hasnt sagged.

Look in the trader magazines for something that was on a landcruiser or the yellow pages for yards that sell used wheels.
All landcruisers up till about 97 use the same 6 stud rim and I think Nissan Patrol also use the same rim:D

I personally wouldnt buy tyres off ebay,and anyway the freight cost will be a killer;)
 
Most common aftermarket rims in OZ are the 15x7, 15x8 ,16x7 and 16x8 inch rims for cruisers. These are most common in white or black paint.
Most common tyre sizes for the 15 inch rims are 31x9.5x15, 31x10.5x15 etc. The 16 inch rims start about 225x70 x16, 235x75x16 235x75x16 etc.
As you are looking for economy I am sure you will find the 15 inch sets far cheaper than the 16 inch. Check the "trading Post" for bargains and sales. cheers
 
I need 2 new tyres for the rear. Im thinking about junking the flares and getting a set of 33x9.5x15 BFG.
I found a little rust hole in the rear 1/4 panel and the f/g flares are not the flavour of the month:mad:
Anyone else here running the 33x9.5??
 
I'm running 33x12.5x15 with Fibreglass flares. They sit beautifully.

BFG's have zero traction on aussie roads. A/T's in the wet are like driving on ice, and M/T's HATE tarmac.

In all honesty if you can stretch your budget get either Coopers ST or Coopers STT. If you do a LOT of gravel driving, get ST-C. You will never ever ever look back.

Hi, used to run 235/85/16. Now I run 255/85/16 on same 16x7(?) Toyota rim.

I run 33x9.5x15 bfg's on my BJ74 and they are a great tire for everything other then serious mud. Can't speak for aussie roads but I will buy another set when my current ones wear out. I also have run Goodyear MTR's and they are also a good all purpose tire.
 
I was running 31x10.5x15 on 8 inch rims on the hj75 and now run 33x12.5x15 maxis on 8 inch turbo mags. Nothing rubs and the Maxis Bukshot's have plenty of grip and run quiet for a block tyre.

These 8 inch rims off the 75 were hanging outside the guards and I was told to change them.So back to the origional 7 inch sunnies.:mad: :beer: :beer:

Ballarat is not far from you, you could try Value tyres in Sutton st delacombe for rims, they're pretty cheap there. Bob jane in Ballarat sell second hand rims too, they would have factory 80 series probably, I paid AUD$50 each for 78 series ROH rims. I use BFG mud in 285 / 75 / 16, they are my road tyres and I get really good wear out of them for about AUD$300 each. I think they're cheaper in 15".

I do nearly all my off road driving in terrain like shown below. Ive found found the BFG t/a are tye best without going for a specialist sand tyre.The MT break the surface.
The RR had geolanders and got stuck on the beachLOL

Ive looked at the Coopers but I see a lot of mixed responces on various forums.
I do zero rock and gravel terrain,there just isnt any around here that isnt locked away in national parks

You're welcome to get the BFG's but before you do... go find someone who has them and ask them if they like driving on Ice as soon as it starts to spit (let alone a real downpour).

My G/F's dad's 2.8 diesel hilux can smoke them up like nothing else as soon as the road gets even remotely wet... and he's got BRAND NEW BFG A/T's. Also got a number of people at work who have horror stories with these tyres.

Apparently Federal's tyres are supposed to work very well in sandy/dusty conditions.

Ive been using them for 3 years now and no problems but I use my car for daily driving in the suburbs.

I did ask quite a few people and generally got favourable comments;)

I wont be smoking tyres up like your g/f dad(or was it you?;) ),I have too much respect for my cruiser and its tyres.
And as a a 3rd mech eng student you should know that once something has lost its frictional grip all else is irrelevant:D
 
My point isnt' that it smokes them. My point is it's totally gutless and the tyres don't have enough friction in the wet to stop a completely gutless 2.8 n/a diesel in third gear from a standing start losing traction.

And no, it actually wasn't me. I drive other peoples cars with respect :p
 
Unfortunately my experience with my STT's have been anything but the horror stories listed there. I have no idea how those fellas are abusing their tyres but I still have 16mm of tread (stock 18) after 8000 kms incl forest bashing. One of the tyres even still has the knobbly bits on the side. There are the occasional score mark on the outside edges where sticks and the like have attempted to puncture the tyre but glanced off. Nothing to be overly fussed about.

I love them, I'll use them again.
