Hey guys, I've been lurking here for a couple weeks, did some searching and didnt find what I was looking for....

I've currently got an 01 Sequoia that we use to tow our Coachmen Catalina Travel Trailer.....it is a 24 foot trailer with loaded weight of about #4250. Tongue weight with full propane tanks was about #500 if I remember right.

Can the LC tow this length trailer safely? I know the LC has a slightly shorter wheelbase than my Sequoia, but seems rock solid.......I have a Reese Dual Cam weight distribution hitch with Anti-Sway Control, and electric brakes.

Just thought I'd ask the pros;)

Ben

Welcome to the forum!

I would think it should be fine, at least weightwise, as long as you have working trailer brakes.

You shouldn’t have a problem.. I tow a 22 ft boat (trailer is about 25ft in total) that weighs 5000 dry and we always throw our toys and such in there I usually end up towing 6000lbs when we go out to the lake.. Including the passengers and all our gear and both my 96 lc and the LX tow I with east and effortlessly, the lc has a tough time on steep hills but you can’t really blame the rig... but the LX has no problems what so ever.. Handles well, very predictable and controllable. As long as you’re a good driver and know what to expect of the rig( know how to read the road, speeds, wids ect) you will never run into problems....

THanks for the input.....

I know the LC will handle the weight, but wondered about the trailer length.....dont want to run into sway issues with the slightly shorter WB on the Cruiser.....it is at the shorter end of the vehicle spectrum for the length of trailer, but I think it will be OK.

I know there are Wheelbase to Overhang ratios that help calculate max trailer length, but there are a lot of extra variables too, like vehicle weight, etc.

:)

Thanks, Ben

I'm happy to see that you are now looking at the LC as a possibility.
Have you considered reliablity issues between the Touareg and the LC?
How do they compare otherwise? for your use.

Undoubtably, the LC has the best reliability of just about anything.

Originally, my wife and I were considering a Volvo XC90, VW Touareg V8, and a LC. After towing the trailer this weekend a distance, we decided we aren't comfortable towing it with anything less than a "fullsize" SUV.

We've got great equity in the Sequoia right now, just debating whether it is worth it or not to upgrade to the LC.

:)

Thanks, Ben

I would definitely go with the Land Cruiser. I used to tow a 16' trailer all the time with my FJ40 with no problems. The LC can hack it!

Same here. I have a picture of my LC in the picture thread with my boat. It's well over 5000lbs with everything. Towed the boat from the north Chicago suburbs to Branson, MO last year with no problems. As was stated, you just have to know your limitations. My boat is 21' stock. Add on the swim platform and the trailer tongue and I'm at least 25' if not a bit more.

Edit: I linked in the picture.

I tow our 21' Aerolite with a GVW of #4000 and a tongue weight of #365 with no problems. I had a 1996 Tahoe and bought the LandCruiser to replace it. I wondered about the difference towing, but the Cruiser has wound up to be just as steady as the Tahoe. I've had no sway problems at all using a older Eaz-Lift hitch with no sway control. Good luck in your decision.

If you use your car only for towing, and have no offroad passion - why would you want to upgrade to LC?

Let me try and answer this for you. The 100 series here in the USA is a luxury SUV that is tops in quality and a good used vehicle value. We all know that the 100 series can go off road but here in the USA most are used to take kids to soccer practice. I see the trade from a Sequoia to a LC/LX as just a upgrade in luxury and quality with the ability for more off road ability if that is needed down the road. In the USA when you pull a trailer out to camp it is nice then to have a vehicle that you can explore with versus just use as a tow vehicle.

Since everyone is posting pictures of their towable toys, I couldn't resist. '83 Mastercraft Stars/Stripes. 3100 lbs with all the gear. TLC yanks the whole thing out of a muddy boat ramp that swallows the trailer tires with no trouble at all on a wet grass with the stock slicks (Michelin LTX M/S).

This was our Toyota caravan one trip when moving back to SC from Houston. I drove the 100, my wife drove our Tundra. My wallet is shrinking just thinking about all the gas I bought that trip. :D

Just pulled a small U-haul from Atlanta GA. to Boston Ma. at 75 mph average including gas stops. The trailer was loaded with tools, so was the cruiser. so much so that hydo plane speed was 30mph. Luckily only ran into a few rainy spots that slowed me down.
No handling problems, never had a problem slowing a semi down. I was passing them all. Word of caution the South west tip of Virginia speed trap every 6 miles on the average. Set the cruise on the speed limit and behave yourself. (no tickets since 75)

Thanks for the post, I'm going to be pulling a 6x12 Uhaul from Utah to Missouri next month over the rockies and through Denver. Won't be loaded that heavy but when I read the Uhaul site they state not to tow their trailers over 45 mph. What's with that crap???? I figure I won't drive over 70 mph. sounds like from your experence this won't be a problem.

I did 65 most of the way with the uhaul in the above post w/ no problems too. ~1000 miles for reference.

You got that right. :D The boxy u-haul was too intimidating to her so I got stuck with the less glamorous cargo. :o

Is that the 6x12 Uhaul? I haven't looked at them yet but know that is the size I need. Web site said they have surge brakes on them, now did they work? I have new pads on my LC but I am going over the rocky mtn's so I hope they contribute to the braking. What kind of mpg did you get pulling that big box trailer.

Thanks
