I know this subject has been beaten to death here. Has anyone found a solution?

I occasionally get the single click (from the starter?) when I turn the key. I have found out that I have a little play in the park position on the gear shift. And it has to be in exactly the right spot to start. But joy to me, that spot seems to move whenever it decides to click on me.

New battery, new starter, new alternator, new battery cables... where else can I look?

I'm brand new to cruisers but I'd check the brake pedal switch as you have to push to brake pedal to start and I'd check the neutral safety switch. If you are going to wheel it you might bypass the neutral safety switch incase it dies on an incline you could restart without going to neutral or park.

My 91 is getting out of the shop tomorrow for the same problem. My mech is 100% sure hes got the problems solved, and I did all the same things you did plus a new distributor. It was a smaller piece of the ignition behind the lock cylinder. I will let you know tomorrow exactly what it was. Good luck.

I replaced my starter when I got the "click" noise. I get the click i start up the car every time. But the like the 6th try the car would start It will get worse and worse until you srater fries and can go anywhere.

Does it do it only when the engine is warmed up? If so do a search under EFI relay, you'll probably need to bridge a 10 gauge wire to replace the 12 gauge wire going to the relay. Good luck.

Skyshark--distributor ouch...Mine might be dead (hope not) but that thing is like 500 bucks

Whether its warmed up or not doesn't seem to be the determining factor. It will do it from a cold start or it will do it after a road trip. Hot or cold doesn't fix it or make it worse.

Got mine back today. Ignition switch replaced. No lock cylinder, just the electronics behind it. There is HUGE difference in how the starter ingages now. Even when it would work before there was a very slight delay when I turned the key before it would start cranking. Now there is absolutely no hesitation at all, and it works like a charm every time. Ive been out there playing with it for a couple hours. Driving it around, getting it hot, starting stopping starting again. Im convinced this was the problem.

Total cost was 153.69 for labor and parts.

Nyk....yes, that is spendy. I got mine put in with parts and labor for 402.

If youve tried everything else with no results, this is less than a starter. I would give it a shot.

Is this still working out for you? My buddy has a 92 where you can turn the key to start and hold it for a couple seconds before anything happens.

Neutral Start Switch. This is a pizza slice looking guy that lives on the left side of the tranny and allows you to start in either P or N. If wiggling the shifter allows the starter to engage, then this is the culprit. It also runs the dash tally lamps for shifter position. I found that when mine started to go I was able to get the dash tallies to flicker my moving the shifter.

The EFI circuit has NOTHING to do with cranking the starter motor.
