Took the new tires out for their snow testing in Sugarite Canyon just east of Raton on the Colorado-New Mexico border.

First photo on the NM side shows the tires on the truck. I think the extra width of the 285/75s really improves the stance of the truck when seen from the front.

Second shows the Colorado side with unplowed roads. I did get the rear end to slide on me a little going up a steep hill with the rear locker engaged but never lost traction enough to justify putting on the chains.

Here the roads were totally snow packed and I did some full braking tests. With the tires and ABS I came to a rapid stop while maintaining complete control.

I would have liked to get further off the beaten track but most of the trails had been closed off for winter and I was running out of daylight.I was very impressed with the performance of these tires and would recommend them to anyone who is looking for a All-season All-Terrain Tire.

Pictures reduced from life-sized to web-friendly. :D

Get Irfanview (www.irfanview.com) & start playing with it. Really compact & easy to use.

Those tires look life sized. You could do forensic studies with those pictures. JK.

Looks good. What kind of chains do you have? Have you used them w/ the Revo's, and are there clearance problems?

Thanks

The chains are LaClede Truck Tire chains (3229CAM). They are Cam-locked highway chains from their commercial line. I was going to try them out for fit and clearance but ran out of daylight. I'll post again when I get the chains on and tested. I still have to figure a way to safely tie them down in the back they weigh about 60lbs.

Very nice. Where did you get your tires?

Got them at Albuquerque Tire on Menaul. I pay a little more but they have a competent alignment tech and are close to my house.

Do you have 4 chains or 2 for rear only?

You guys with the 285 Revos, do they fit fine w/o rubbing our do you have lift kits to accomodate them?

good to know- when the michelins wear out, I know what size to look for

4 chains of course.

I wouldn't get into the world's premier 4-wheel-drive vehicle ... in snow or ice ... and drive it with only 2 effective wheels. :D

If I were to have only two chains I would be inclined to place them upfront for steering. (unless I was going primarily down steep hills and needed to anchor the rear more than I needed to steer)

By having two sets of chains you avoid having to decide whether it is more important to get to make turns in the direction you want to go or to keep the front in front of the rear of the truck.

Very good. Has anyone ever seen or used these?

http://www.flextrax.com/

They have the advantage of being able to install when stuck, I suppose less wear on the tires, and less potential damage to fenders, etc.

Downside is cost- I think a set of 2 for 285/16's is about $250.00

The flextax look interesting although the web sight has an infomercial quality to it.
The product combines proven techniques of mechanical engineering, physics, material handling, and hydraulics to achieve a modular design that gives superior performance

They look like they would be easy to store in the vehicle.

Here is a 4x4 article on chains I found informative even though he's a Land Rover fan.

Chain Article by Bill Burke

He recommends a chain called the Grip 4x4 Chain that looks interesting.

Flextrax

I phoned Flextrax to get more information regarding how durable, for general off-road travel, the Flextrax is; particularly on rocky, snow/ice covered terrain. Couldn't get anyone on the phone...had to leave a message...instead of waiting for someone to call me back I e-mailed them my questions. If I ever hear from them I will forward their response...

I've got the next sized down Revos and I think they rock in snow. But they are only so-so in rocks....

Welcome to the board Lars! I speak for a good many on the board when I say that those big cruisers are awesome!!

Lars:

Welcome. I got to know how you stuff 38's under a LC100. Please share. Those shots are just plain tough.
