Driveshaft woes

Got that little vibration problem fixed...It was just out of phase took about 15 minutes to fix. While at LCS I found out that I'll be needing a new driveshaft :(. The splines are wearing and there is getting too much play.


New driveshafts are what $400. Looking for a used driveshaft for an FJ80 now.
 
how "out of phase" was it? Front or rear. I may have what you need....re-tubed to a thicker wall and ready to go. PM me if you're interested.

Needed to be turned 180 degrees. I need new front and rear drive shaft, with good splines.
 
Phase changes every 90 degrees, 180 would be the same point in phase you started with. Whatever they did fixed it, that's good.

You must have money falling out of your pockets. Worn drive shaft splines on a 3FE? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. That's a good one. Guess they told you you also need a new muffler bearing? Like the drive shaft splines, this is another common item needing replacement. (cough, choke, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......)

you want to get under my truck and see how much the driveshaft moves up and down?


I throw it in reverse and theres a nice clunking noise.


BTW I took the truck to Land Cruiser Speacialists... Check with some people that are from Austin, Texas and you'll find out that they're some of the better LC mechanics and they're honest.

yeah good pt. after I posted I was thinking that would just throw it off again. It was rotated and had it filled with grease...

Yeah, one problem with the truck before it was mine was someone when getting the car washed hit the CDL switch and the light on the dash never came on. Nor me or my father ever used it (this was before I got the car and started wheeling) and could not figure out what the grinding noise was from. That couldn've put stress on the driveshaft :P
 
A drive shaft moving up and down does not indicate spline wear. It likely moves up and down at either the diff end or the TC end, right? Those are different issues and different parts.

As for the clunk, attributing it to the front shaft splines is again barking up the wrong tree. That is about the very LAST place I'd expect slack on this vehicle. Most likely clunk sources are the front axle drive plates, the F/R diffs and the TC in that order.

I dunno why I really address this, honestly. You've come to the list with this as a "I've got this wrong cause X told me so. Poor me." rather than "hey, I've got a shaft moving up and down and a shift clunk - what do you guys think of someone telling me I need a new front drive shaft?" so you really didn't ask for my unsolicited advice. Pardon my interruption - really. Back to the regularly scheduled programming.

Well there still is a little vibration at high speeds. It is ten times better than when it was out of phase. Could it be that it's not totally in the correct phase or could this be a drveshaft attributed problem.


Doug--Sorry for coming off as a jackass. I'm stressin b/c my truck is breaking and I'm pinching pennies to try and get a way to fix it. No truck means $320 less a month.


My apologies for coming off the wrong way. So far at LCS they have been nothing but nice to me they fixed the pahse problem for free, I've heard from numerous people on here that they're very good with cruisers.


Didn't mean to offend anyone.

Do you know that the phasing is different between the front and rear driveline? Notice the picture in this thread you started. A few weeks ago.

Don't know if you realized it or not, but the guys at LCS should know if they're specialists. But then again, it will only take you 5 minutes to check it out yourself. :flipoff2:
 
Oh...and BTW. If you see that the diagnosis was correct and need a new/used driveline. I'm more than likely going to be upgrading mine to one built with a CV joint. I retubed mine less than 1k miles ago to a thicker wall and would be perfect if you're going to start wheeling your junk. You don't want this to happen to you.

No harm and thanks for extending the hand. If you've reduced the vibe that much, then it's highly likely to be sourced from something else (edit - the remainder of the vibe, that is). Unlubed shafts do vibrate and nearly all the time a lube fixes it.

As for LCS, I'm sure they're fine folks. But it would be hard to replicate the amount of intimate knowledge on the 80 series that exists on this forum at any five good cruiser shops, let alone one. For instance, Christo and Robbie (Slee Offroad) specialize in the 80 series and would have noted the incorrectly installed out of phase front shaft in about, oh 9 seconds after getting it on the rack to diagnose your front vibration. We here on the forum caught it also. LCS did not.

So, before you stress about things breaking, use this forum for what it's best at - tremendous knowledge for free. I don't know what else is amiss with your truck because you haven't listed problems, but I'll guarantee someone here has had the exact issue and can tell you how to deal with it.

I had everything lubed up and it helped the vib greatly but it's still there slightly.


Oh theres a list of whats wrong with the truck...

1.Exhaust leak
2. Valves need adjustment (ticking noise while running)
3. Driver's side window won't go down
4. Brakes feel soft, had them bled still has the same problem.



I've tried working on my truck but that ended up in disaster, I'm scared to wrench on my own b/c I don't want to break it myself then have to pay a lot of money to have it fixed. To check the splines myself just drop the driveshaft and pull the front out and look for wear?

Blah it's 3am and all I've done is research for paper and trying to figure out whats wrong with my truck. Need sleep, more time for LC tomorrow. :beer:

Hmm I'm more than likely will be PMing you about it. Only snafu is I don't have the cash right now. Will it fit my 91? I'll end up replacing both front and rear driveshafts soon.
