Following are my suggestions for those interested in exploring parts of Pisgah, of course all feedback and ideas are welcome.

Friday night: camp at Mt. Mitchell State Park - Black Mountain Campground, or somewhere nearby. Since it seems no-one knows the area, we should probably have a well-defined meeting place. O and it was like 72* last week at Mt. Mitchell.

Saturday: explore forest roads and trails in the area outside of Mt. Mitchell St Park, off the Blue Ridge Parkway. For those with a DeLorme Gazetteer, page 32; 35*50'00" north and 82*15'00"; or south of Rt 19E and north-northwest of the BRP.

If this area has some nice trails, take our time and possibly camp out Saturday night.

If this area is a dud, head north towards Boone and Blowing Rock to run Richland Gap?

Joe, This sounds like a good start, you want to caravan up friday? What time are you thinking of leaving?

Jaun, if you get this are you planning on heading up Friday. We could have a nice caravan.

Andy, you going to make this trip.

I can leave any time Friday. The campground is first come - first serve so I was thinking of leaving mid-day.

Cool, I plan on making it to camp Friday night and to hang out for a bit / explore Saturday. I have to bail Saturday afternoon to be back in CLT.

EDIT: I was just looking at the campground info as I've never camped in MMSP proper.

I can *hopefully* get up there on the early side on Friday and help reserve spots.

That being said, if MMSP is already full, there are lots of places to primitive camp given that it is all PNF land. Many times I've pulled off the BRP and hiked in just enough off the road to be out of site and set up camp.

Communicating / coordinating when making decisions on the fly will be the tough part so it is good there is a general game plan.

Well lets set a departure time for those here in trianlge, and also a meeting place for those coming from different directions. I m not really familiar with that area however I should have GPS with me.

Joe I should have no problem leaving at that time.

We rent a cabin every fall and x-mas right before the entrance of the black mountain campground.....so we are familiar with the area, but those roads are normally closed in winter.

We will be leaving sometime Friday afternoon around 5 pm or so.....we might be able to leave earlier, but I not sure. What time are you guys planning on taking off...??

Maria

I'd like to be out of this area around 2PM. But if Greg wants to wait until you can take off, Maria, I am completely fine with that too.

Just keep updating when your caravan plans to roll. I can either join or head up earlier to reserve sites.

As always, my departure time is hard to determine at this point in the week...

I am okay with whatever time, i would like to try and beat some of the traffic around the greensboro area, but I want to make sure everyone has time and doesn't feel rushed. So i will work with others schedules. Just keep me posted.

Greg, I heard you moved into the 'hood - somewhere off James Jackson in Cary? If so, let's meet at the BP at Cary Parkway and Chapel Hill Rd (next to Los Tres Magueyes) at 1:30 Friday.

If Juan and Maria can leave early, maybe we can meet them somewhere out along 40, closer to where they live?

I say we plan to meet at Black Mtn Campground around 6PM. Once we have a full roster of who'll be coming, we can see if campsites are available, then call anyone who'll be arriving later (assuming cells work there?).

It doesn't look as if I'll be able to camp Saturday night, but we'll see.

JUAN: bring my radio. ;)

Yep, I've got it, they thought I could get it to you easier since we live pretty close, then I put it in my console and forgot :(. I may be coming over on Wed. Sol if that's OK, I think a guy is buying that chassis. I could bring it then. I'll call Juan tomorrow to discuss. If not, I can get w/ Joe this week and get it to him.

Ramon

I will get it from you and bring it to Joe.....By any means Joe I will bring it with me....Ramon if you want to come over wed that is fine...none the less if you do not make it I will make a trip to get it so that I can return it to Joe. Sol did not mean to say it was not our responsibility to return it to you I borrowed it from you and I will get it back..sorry if her post above made it sound like we just turned it over someone else and forgot about it.

It's no big deal, don't sweat it! Juan I was giving you s**t! I can stop by Ramon's place and pick it up, he's close by...........

Joe 1:30 friday works for me, I'll meet you there. Do we have any definite details of where we will start traveling saturday, i have got a buddy coming down from murphy and he's going to meet up on saturday morning.

Well, he could meet us at the campground if he can get there early enough (and if we do get campsites). Otherwise there are a handful of places I have marked right off the Parkway, and two roads that start near the campground. I'll post up details later.

I do have to leave Saturday. I will not be under any time pressure, but my in-laws are coming for the weekend, so I at least have to see them Saturday night/Sunday morning before they leave.

One thing I want to make clear: the trails etc that I've located may be graded roads or easy forest roads, I just don't know. This is an exploratory trip in this one area, I want to do some other similar trips to see what we can find. So Saturday may be a boring ride as far as challenge goes. Again, I'll post up what I've marked and if anyone has insight, speak up.

Areas and roads to explore

Here are some of the roads I want to explore. If you know that any one of these is a dud, let me know.

All roads are on pg 32 of the Delorme Gazetteer, right around the latt/long I posted above. And they're off of or close to the BRP.

TR161 - has mountains named Point Misery, Little Butt, Big Butt. Even if this is a paved road, I want to be able to say I drove up Big Butt which led to Point Misery.;)

North to south: FR5576 to TR179 to TR177 and the various offshoots. Or south-to-north start at TR197.

Go over Bear Ridge to Blue Sea Creek, follow that to Cane River.

South and east of the BRP, bounded by 70 to the south, and 221 to the east (it's a triangular area), there are a ton of township roads, forest roads, and a few routes marked 4WD. We'll have to cross over 80 to get to the more northerly roads.

I've also located a few forest fire lookout towers, which if they're open, I'd like to climb.
