Ok, I just bought a HH187 and thought the 220v service that is in the workshop would work. Well after getting the 187 home, I found the recepticle is different. So off to Home Depot to get the right recepticle. The breaker is a 30A breaker running to an old looking 220v recepticle. I examimed the wires, which as far as I could tell, looks like only 1 piece of romex running from the box to recepticle. So, if I am going to run my 187 off this 220 leg, I am going to have to install new wire right? And that new wire should be #10?

I just want to make sure I understand this and have it wired correctly before I go and hook up my brand new welder only to find it is not right and I fry something.

Any help appreciated!

The HH187 gives you the receptacle specs...I think a NEMA 6-50R; Yes, you need at least 10 gauge. I would not skimp and buy a receptacle at home depot. Go to an electrical supply store and buy a new steel box and receptacle.

All that said...I am not an electrician...so be cautious and don't stand in a puddle, or work with live wires.

Does the romex have 3 wires in them?

If the wire is the right gauge (10 gauge or larger), I don't see why you couldn't just replace the receptacle and be done with it. 2 hots go connect to the blades on the plug. Ground connects to the round on the plug. Be sure to turn off the breaker before your start. I've never had any issue with plugs and receptacles purchased at HD or Lowes.

Look for 6-50p (plug) and 6-50r (receptacle) diagrams on this web site.. Note the letter, "g" indicating ground.

Well I got everything I need at home depot. The romex that was there would have worked, it was 220 wire, but it was 12-2 instead of 10-2, i think that is right. Anyway, it was yellow wire and the guy said with what I am doing I need orange wire. So I pulled new wire and ran it to the panel. I installed the new recepticle I bought from HD (which was the 6-50) and voila! I'm in business.

EXCEPT...

I bought .035 solidcore wire to use with my 75/25 gas and not the .035 contact tip!!! :crybaby: And of course when I found out that I didn't have it, it was 7:59 and Tractor Supply closes at 8:00. So I have to wait until tomorrow, but at least I have power now. Since I had downtime I went ahead and assembled my 25' 220 extension cord from the supplies I had bought while at HD. At least I got that done. So tomorrow morning I'll be off to TSC for the tips and will start burning my first welds. :bounce:

I would run some .030 wire with you HH187. It will work MUCH better for you.
Be sure to get some 70ER-S6 wire.
