Folks,

The spare was flat so after soaking the winch unit with penatrating oil and the chain. I got the tire down and attempted to put it back up but ,I broke the spring that is on the winch. Now the tire won't return, so any idea on how long this spring is? I have a part of it but do not know where it attaches. ,Also will this lack of spring make the tire not go up?? Just to confim.

I know a swing away tire holder would fix this lousy design, but I'm not there yet!!

thanks for the help,

bob

i believe the spring is to keep the winch from unrolling when you dont want it to

OK, I still don't know where the spring goes but I broke off the "ring"clip that holds the shaft of the winch. So I modded a u-joint clip to work. The tire is back up there, but What/where is the spring for????

Bob,

If it would help I can take a pic of my assembly that I recently removed when I installed my Slee rear bumper/tire carrier. I didn't pay too much attention to it when I took it off so I'm not much help without getting home and snapping a pic of it for you.

That's the worst thing Toyota ever did. It appears to serve three purposes:

1) reducing ground clearance

2) exposing the spare to the elements and road damage

3) adding unnecessary mechanical parts to an area difficult to access and prone to clogging and corrosion.

First thing I do with any Toy I buy is remove the spare from that stupid contraption. If you're not ready for a spare carrier, just ratchet-strap the spare to the floor of the cargo area, or get Slee's tire bracket.

Hmmm, I like that tire bracket. I'll have to think about it. I still like the factory look and the 3rd row seating.

Yes, thank you. So it has 2 springs and it looks like my guides a busted also. My chain likes to get wrapped around the "drum" and lock up. And is really rusted , it would appear that all the rust on the vehicle is concentrated on that winch:)??

Pm sent thanks

time for a rear bumper and tire carrier... perfect excuse to the :princess: if you have one! seriously, changing the tire on the trail is brutal if it is under there...

wow that spare winch looks a whole lot cleaner than mine do!

Despite living in muddy rustville, I've gotten decent life out of my spare winches by lowering/raising them every 3 or 6 months and hitting them with a shot of white lithium out of a can.

it does require 10 minutes of my time. But I"m worth it.
