I just parted out an '83 Toyota 4x4 that seemed to a collection of parts. The rear axle I took out is kid of unusual. It is 58 inches wide, from wheel mount to wheel mount. It has the "big" center section and disc brakes. I am trying to determine what the is axle is originally from. I can find no reference on the web to the small Toyota pickups or the Four Runner using this rear and nothing else seems to be 58". Any ideas? I can't seem to post pics here but Ican send them to anyone who wants to take a look and offer an opinion. Email me at pwrwgn@comcast.net and I will send them.

With a little help from the FAQ I can post a couple photos. As you can see from the rear cover this is not the standard 8" axle used in the IFS trucks. It appears to be the heavy duty axle but I have not found any reference to a 58" version of the heavy duty axle. I have little background in Toyotas so I thought I would ask the experts here. Do the discs look like stock Toyota? I know some conversions use Cadillac calipers for the E-brake function. This may be a conversion. I don't know. Thanks

From other pictures I have seen on the web T100 or Tundra seems likely. Measured WMS to WMS on the ground. It may be off by a 1/4 inch but it is not as wide as a T100. Were there any heavy duty IFS chassis's? Maybe motorhome? or stake body?

Axle maybe narrowed too. I don't know it's history.

Have the spring perches been cut? Rewelded? I swear the neck down with a weld (For the spacer on the end of axle tube) looks fimiler.......T.....

I can tell you how that rear is built....H.D, has connections at bearing caps that cross side to side so it cant flex and break....H.D....

mine was factory 4:87 gear dont ask toy for gear price $900 for R&P only!!!
Bolt pattern(3rd) from T WILLNOT be the same as ?-95.

Did not imply your incorect, the after conversion measurement, get it!

you make my head hurt reading your posts...........

The third member looks like a 4.87 4Runner third (this came with Auto trannys and 31"s)
Someone most likely used this to get the lower dear ration in this housing (offset pinion too) their is no aftermarket support for lockers or gears for this rear end.... oh yeah the little thing in the top of the third member with the wires/plug is for rear anti lock brakes.

and yes the bolt pattern is the same for third members in minis excluding the tacoma locker

Tried to post a picture and would have to take others down to first. So we added axle pics to our homepage. Here is a direct link.

Up a level for pics of assorted trucks and places we've broken them.

looks like toyota calipers.

this has to be a home made chop.

one spring perch looks cut off, the other looks like on top.
if it truly is on top, it would be from a 4x4 truck.

looks like a three spline diff, not a five spline. a three is from a 4cyl.

there were dual wheel and single wheel one ton axles availible some with low gear ratios.

but i belive this is a 4x4 axle, not a 2WD.

That is not a toyota axle. It is spring under, with disc brakes, with a dropout differential, and it has a rear ABS sensor. I'd stab a guess that it is out of a older Trooper, Pathfinder, Rodeo thingy.

one of the spring perches is cutt off, the other is spring over.
what toyota doesent have a drop out diff?
speed sensors are not on the diff, they are on the output shaft on the trans. the one pictured is a ABS sesor.

I was just saying that, being that it is still a dropout with a rear abs sensor, that this is not a Toyota axle. The differential pinion flange and the round "diff cover area" and a dead give-away that this is not toyota.

I know that all of toyotas solid axles use dropout differentials. I was just stating what I had seen in the pictures.

For a while people were swaping in differentials from Pathfinders because of the rear disc and the LSD that most of them had.

i bet your right about it being from a pathfinder

I am planning to sell the axle. Hard to sell it without a positive ID. Pretty sure Izuzu Rodeo and Trooper use a Dana 44. Sought after by Jeep guys. I am not familiar with the Pathfinder axle. I heard they were a popular swap for disc brakes but haven't found a picture. I would like to find one to compare. The round cover suggest it is the bigger Toyota 3rd member shown on the right in the picture above. The truck we parted out had been sprung over. Anbody know if the ends from an 8" will fit on the Tundra axle. The shaft diameters are the same so narrowing a T100/Tundra axle to use 30 spline axles from an IFS truck might not be to hard. Thanks for your help
