Oil cooler from Sherry's 80. Corroded through the main oil passage into the coolant jacket. Compression was 170-180 in all 6 holes and no white smoke or sweet smelling exhaust. No air bubbles in rad or overflow bottle. Only symptom was oil pumping into coolant causing oily overflow in coolant and milky oil in the pan. Cross your fingers!

Yeah, that one area of the oil cooler was packed with crusty sludge. Scraping at it uncovered the hole into the oil passage as well as the other holes to the outside. If the oil problem had not showed itself it would not have been long before she started leaking coolant anyway.

WOW!
What do you think caused the corosion? To eat through alloy?

Disagree Nolen. My money is on lack of proper maintenance on the cooling system. Antifreeze has corrosion inhibitors that get tired after a couple of years. Your avg soccer mom doesn't realize how important a good flush and fill is every couple of years.

Note to self... About time to do the other 80 and the Dodge again this fall.

So the oil cooler has anti-freeze in it? I thought it circulated oil. Shows you how much I know about that motor......gotta get on that #6 EGR thingy too......

Yep. The FZJ has an oil cooler bolted to the side of the block just behind the front half exhaust manifold. Oil circulates through three thin plates that are surrounded by coolant from the water jacketin the block. In my case, a hole developed in the oil passage leading to the plate cooler allowing oil to mix with the water and water to mix with the oil. Oil is under about four times the pressure that the water is under so I was getting oil/water mix overflowing from the coolant overflow jug as well as milky colored oil in the pan. Somewhat similar symptoms to a head gasket failure but hg failures generally consume coolant, show white smoke from the exhaust, and have a sweet smell to the exhaust. Also, you can usually confirm a blown head gasket by doing a compression test. You will generally have low/no compression on one or two cylinders depending on where the gasket failed. Overheating is usually associated with head gasket failure too. It's kinda the chicken or the egg question on the whole overheating thing. Most thing overheating is a sign(symptom) ofhead gasket failure but I tend to believe poor maintenance on the cooling system may cause the overheating which leads to head gasket failure due to the uneven expansion between the head and block at high temps. Just my $.02 though. Anyway, Sherry had no overheating problem either so that's what led me to the oil cooler to look for the cause. Hope I'm right!

Well you might as well change the HG gasket since your in there .... ; )

Was the oil cooler a PIA to get to?

All new parts from our friends at TOD came to $202 with shipping but I have to get my Toyota red coolant local(TOD won't ship coolant due to Hazmat). Thanks Jacque!

Really wasn't too bad to get to after I got over having to take the supercharger apart. Would be a bit easier on a non SC truck. Changing the head gasket was in the original plan but I have decided against it. A lot more work, it ain't bad, Sherry has been without her truck since I got back from GSMTR, and it's too damn hot. Compression was good between 170-180 on all 6 cyls so I'm going to take a chance and run with it. Will change a few hoses(like PHH) while I'm in there though. Wish me luck.

what can I say Daryl?

The best of luck on that 80!

hopefully that solves you're problems.

my 80 ever since we got back from Moab, she's been sitting on the garage.

gotta a trip to Austin and Houston next weekend, but we're driving my wife's 80.
The 94 has been just her daily driver around town and no trips since 2007.

we'll see how she behaves!

I agree on not doing the HG right now until you have the A) time and B) vehicle down-time.
The HG on the 1FZE is easy but TIME CONSUMING job. Took me 10 nights of about 5 hours at a time from start to finish.... Takes 6 hours to just GET to the HG...

Time for an update. I stayed home to work on the rig this weekend rather than join the CLC guys & gals at the beach (idiot). The 80 is back in one pc and seems to have segragated oil and water systems once again. Still a little work to do like address a fast idle problem, replace one vacuum line that broke, another oil and filter change, and several coolant flushes but the hard part is done. So glad it wasn't a head gasket! Sherry will be cruisen her SC80 when she gets back from the beach!(she is the smart one)

Now that thats done you can come to the beach. You can ride with me if you dont want 2 vehicles down there. Leaving monday.
