It may help if you upload pics of the leak but I wouldn’t replace the shock just yet as they rarely are the issue.

The shocks aka hydraulic rams usually don’t leak. If there is seepage from the top it’s usually bc of the globe pressures are too high.

I installed the brush holder with only one screw since I lost the other and now my battery light is on. Do these screws complete some sort of circuit where a missing one could cause this?

What are those codes? Did you check the pcv valve? Also disconnect the battery for a few minutes to see if the CEL comes back on.
