RTH: Rear Axle JIS Screws Mushroomed

@Malleus Thank you a ton for the great pictures and detailed info! Helps out a lot! No it can't, and I don't want to follow them. I want to learn from their mistakes and do it the correct way. I ended up buying the one from Delta VS because I also don't have a socket big enough for the front...

Absolutely, I know you don't want anything in there that is not supposed to be in there. It really does... I have not a clue as to why or how it got to be that way. Would a file be best? The spindle would be soft metal, and the file seems like it would be too "hard/rough?" Here is a short...

Live and learn... Thought it would be okay, but clearly not. What is the best way to do so?

Well... I am also going to Highlight a mistake I made and to see what I need to do next. Below are two photos of the walls for the inner race when I removed it. I somehow damaged the walls when hammering them out. I used a blunted chisel, a drift and a hammer. Not sure where I went wrong, tried...

If my brother ever finishes his rig I would have something to go off of...! I understand where you were coming from now. Reading this out loud I totally agree. Reading through it at times I think about "what about this?" "what about that?" But it's never explained and makes sense that it was...

Thank you, I will keep this in mind for next time I need new bearings. I took some more photos to show area's of concern Inside the spindle: each side Possible wear area's: At each arrow in the photos I can feel a slight "lip." I'm not sure if those three spots are supposed to be there or...

@Kernal Here are some photos, I tried my best to illustrate the threads. Spindle Top: Spindle Threads: Spindle Left Hand Side: Spindle Right Hand Side: Thank you, for 98% of most things I've done on this rig, it's been all OEM parts. I should be able to get everything from my local...

Thank you for the details! My only problem is I have already pulled the LH/Driver side, repacked old bearings, did the preload (which I didn't measure so I need to go back and do so.) So I don't have a 1 to 1 example to see what the temp is compared the other side. I will definitely keep this...

I was just asking to learn myself. This is the first time I've done anything like this job. Okay good, because I was getting so confused for a second. And thank you for including the photos, I usually use Partsouq to find things. I now get to take the LH/Driver side back apart to replace...

Here is the outer race. Then here is the inner race. When getting new bearings, do they come with the races? Because I can't seem to find a part number for them or anything.

I’m thinking about pulling the LH hub again and replacing those bearings too. They weren’t as bad, but similar. I obviously have to get another rear hub seal. Do I need to get another spindle seal? I just did that side last week and haven’t driven it or anything.

How can you tell just by looking at them? Is that also based off what the spindle looks like? Both photos are the same Outer bearing. The flat washers and bendy lock washers you’re talking about, is that for the front? Because I don’t know which parts you’re talking about for the rear. Sounds...

Thank you, I did just that. Also went ahead and ordered two extra ones just in case.

The preload seemed fine, but I didn't try and move the hub back and forth before taking the screws out. When I ordered seals for the axle I spun the tires and shook the tire side to side and up and down. Seemed to pass in my opinion, so I did not buy new bearings. The lock plate was installed...

RTH: Rear Axle JIS Screws Mushroomed

I am currently pulling the RH side rear axle out to reseal everything. After taking the lock screws out of the lock ring I thought the tips looked a little different than the other side. These ones have “gone flat” or “mushroomed” the ends. Are these going to be okay to reuse? Or do I need to...
