Beside my job as ENT surgeon I need efficient recreation.
We do a lot microsurgery of the middle ear, scull base and endoscopic surgery of the nose/sinus.
It´s in a public hospital in vienna AT.
In my teenager years I startet building rc airplanes, later I joined the general aviation starting with glider licence and later ppl.
During my time at the med university a made the cpl und instrument rating. To earn same money I did few hundred hours as flight instructor (single engine piston).
Aeromodeling was also not paused, I still active.
At the age of 18 I got a VOLVO Amazon 220 station from my died grandmother to start car driving, as old car without great value in the 80th. Car repairs and partial restauration costs money, so I started to do the works myself. Now, the car still exists, 52 years on the road!
I friend of our family had a Landrover Stage III since the early seventies. As small child I admired this car with many fantasies about far ventures in deserts and bushlands. This remains until now.
Starting with my job I purchased an early ONE TEN Defender 110 n/a Diesel build 84, due to emission regulations in Austria I had to sell it. The buyer was my parts dealer, he gave me his Defender Td5 110 DCPU 06 for a very good price. Quite clearly that I did this.
Offroading (greenlaning, no trials) is part of any vacancies in croatia or romania. Within AT it´s prohibited. North africa we had joined with my Defender, now it´s to dangerous for individual trips in desert areas.
For everyday use I looked for a car, I looked for a VW Golf. These cars are very expensive in EU. Driving by a Toyota dealer I saw a Hilux 2.4tdi LN165 with 40000km for a very low price. Half of an small VW.
So my Toyota enthusiasm started, I purchased it. The Hilux was 15 years at my own, I sold it to a friend of mine changing to a HDJ100 4.2td. I got it at 270000km /14 years old in good condition.
In Austria we can have one registration (plate set, tax charges and insurence) for up to 3 vehicles. So the running costs are only maintainance and repairs. Overall costs of my 3 older cars are less then these of the new VW T6 Van (leasing, service costs, repairs et.c.) of my neighbor....
I do most of repairs (body, steering joint,bearing and oil seal exchanges, bushings, change of engine perpherals, rust prevention works et.c.) and service works myself, as hobby and to save some money.
Engine and gear issues I commit to workshops, they have real professional skills and tools which I have not . Rebuilding a differential gear with all measurings for exact alignements I can´t do .
Technical hobbies combined with handcraft facilitated my profession as ENT surgeon, the SOPs of aviation too, to stay save in my awkward job.
