QUESTION: AHC failed, sets recommend to convert?

I've always heard restoring the AHC was best. Although, at what point is the AHC worth to repair, and at what point is it too far gone? If you've got rust then you've probably gotta convert, and if it's a lotta rust then you might not want to throw lots of money at a conversion.

    Noob Dilemma

My thoughts exactly. It wouldn't be any cheaper or less frequent on the T4R to replace any of the common issues from a 20+ year old vehicle, correct? It's not like the cruiser is overflowing with excess features that'll need repair... except for the head unit and headrest screens...

    Noob Dilemma

At the moment nothing *really* needs to be done... except the timing belt is pushing it's limits. It doesn't need seat covers or a new head unit to drive, I just figured I'd like to get most of everything I'd want done in one foul swoop so I'm not having to put up with anything else for a while...

Hmm, all of that seems reasonable enough. Still trying to wrap my head around this thing, but I think it's obvious which way I'm leaning. Thanks for the info.

    Noob Dilemma

What kind of DIY work are we talking? As someone else said, I can change a tire, just not a timing belt - so what's an example of some of the in between stuff?

    Noob Dilemma

None of that seems too too horrible. Can't be any worse than cost of ownership of any other vehicle, right? It's not like the 4runner would be any cheaper to repair or any less likely to have problems? As you can tell, I'm really trying to convince myself to keep the cruiser.

Any more info on this cost to own? Just as a pavement princess second vehicle? How *much* of a money pit are we talking?

    Noob Dilemma

My understanding has always been that the 100's are bulletproof, reliable, etc. I thought if I got enough done in one shot from a shop I'd be good to go for another ~100k miles - not so much the case?

    Noob Dilemma

I really can't do much myself, it'd have to be pretty much all shop labor, but I'm not really in a rush as it'll be a second vehicle anyway. It's not even like I have a large family to transport, or lots of overlanding to do, I just like the idea of a bulletproof cruiser that'll last forever...

    Noob Dilemma

That's another problem... I'm not very mechanically inclined and can't really see myself doing anything DIY.

    Noob Dilemma

Name checks out, but don't tempt me. Having a second vehicle at all is already a little wild for me, three vehicles has me on edge.

I've listened to that voice in the back of my head for too long - he's always wrong!

    Noob Dilemma

I guess my question is - if I were to put another 5k into the LC, how much would it actually be worth? Was it a really a deal at $9200 in the first place, or if I put another 5k into the thing, am I only going to be able to get out ~10-12k?

    Noob Dilemma

After being interested in 100 series for some years, but being discouraged by their prices, I got a 2001 4runner a few months ago and the thing has been great. I mostly gave up on my quest for a cruiser... until the other day I saw a 2002 200k mile southern owned, rust-free, one-owner for sale...
