That video was incredibly helpful. Thanks for pointing it out. Showing how the tensioner operates and what the chain slap looks like, helps alleviate some concern and also explains why thicker oil would help. I’m not mechanically inclined, but it seems it should help push the tensioner out...
Thanks! About how long has it been doing this for you? Does it concern you or are you good with leaving it along running a thicker oil?
I just hate to replace the tensioners bc it’s pretty darn invasive (and expensive) and if I take it somewhere it’s never going to go back quite like it was...
I thought I’d resurrect this thread bc I have now changed my oil twice since posting last fall. I went to 5w-20 (to stay in the manufacturer’s alternate US spec), but it didn’t quiet things down. Today I went back to 0w-20 after putting 5k on the clock. I’ve heard the tapping noise all winter...
Thank you! I found out there is a DC/MD|VA group on here too so I’ve been reading those threads as well. Peter Mills also what several there recommend. We’re going to try it out!
Thanks again for the suggestion.
I have a stock 200 series and have never been off-roading. It’s just been a city driver… I want to take my boys out off-roading and will be a complete novice. Are there any good trails near DC/Northern Va anyone here might recommend? It’s supposed to rain this weekend. Is it a bad idea to go...
I have a 2015 200 series with 98k. I posted another thread over the weekend on a timing chain tensioner noise. Thanks to the great folks on this forum for weighing in.
I’m now looking to go to 5w-20, which is what the owners manual says you can go to if 0w-20 isn’t available. Is it better to...
That’s been my experience too. The rapping cycles at idle and cold temp but then goes away when it warms up. From my research and the comment above, I think it’s a tensioner.
Are you going to hang on to yours? I’m on the fence about whether to put $4k into it or to go get something else.
They did change the oil as part of the diagnosis. The quote I got to repair it is $4k. Would you keep it or trade it in?
I love the truck, but it has 98k and is now 8 years old.
Thank you so much. I hear it most near the driver wheel well. Were you able to hear the second video? Did that sound right? The first video is about as bad as it ever has been or gets.
Is the timing chain tensioner expensive to replace? I had seen another video on a tundra that sounded...
